Running BF2 on Ultra High with these specs:

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums. I am soon doing an upgrade on my computer. My specs right now are:

Intel P4 3.00 GHZ
1GB RAM @ 400 MHZ
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 OC PCI 256 MB

And I am upgrading to a:

Intel P4 3.00 GHZ
2GB OCZ Platinum Gamerz Ram @ 800 MHZ Dual Channel DDR2
ATI Radeon X1900 XTX 512 MB



The PC I have right now can BARELY play BF2 on the lowest settings, and I still never seem to get over 25 FPS. I am just wondering if my new PC, (the one I am upgrading to) will be able to hande BF2 on the highest of the high settings @ 1280x1024 resolution and hopefully over 30 fps. What do you guys think?

P.S. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post something like this, I didn't know where else I should post it.

there is no ultra high, but u might be able to max your settings, but like i found it its just bad for you ingame cause its really hard to see the nemy with every shadow hiding them. So i just have AA 8x and maxed out Textures and stuff

Ull prob end up doin the same when u get owned by the guy in the shadow :p

get a better processor. that one will bottleneck your 1950XTX. go for a core 2 dou e6400 or e6600. then you will be able to max out settings and get around 80fps

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\......\My documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001

The 0001 is the first account of BF2. If you are currently using a second, third or whatever account go into that folder ( you can see what account is stored in what 000# folder by checking the Profile thing in the folder).

In the 000# folder you will also see a Video (CON) file. Click on that and manually change the number of samples. It should read VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 4Samples . So you should change it to 8Samples.

Thats a dual core P4 @3.0ghz, it wont be THAT much of a bottleneck.

I currently have an

Opteron 165 Dual Core at 2.3ghz,
2gb of OCZ @400hz and a
x1900xt 512mb o/c to xtx speeds

and I can run all high with 6xAA and 16xAF @1440x900 (my LCD native res) and it never drops below 50, even on full 64 man servers in heavy fights. I would say I average between 70-90 fps with that setup. Although I put dynamic lights and shadows on medium as I saw no difference between med. and high

Or, you can just go into your display settings for windows and force 3D applications to whatever settings you like and turn off the 'application controlled' option. AF is only fluff and makes little difference to quality but will drop your frame rate down a tad so leave it 'off'.
Not trying to sound like a braggart but I can run 1280x1024@85 with all in-game settings to high, view distance to 100% and forced anti aliasing at 8x and get around 120 fps, it will drop to around 80 at times. My specs aren't as impressive as the ones your new machine will have. I'm using the XTreme-G 94.20 driver and that made quite a difference. There's a simillar one for ATI cards available. yeah of couse you can max out lol, but no reason to put DS+DL on high, it looks just as good on medium, I play maxed 4XAA,at a 1400X1050 res and get 50-100+ FPS

Grendel, AF (anisotropic filtering) is definately not fluff, if you just use ingame texture filtering at high compared to my 16xAF, there is a HUGE leap in quality, but all about compromise, I am willing to sacrifice the fps for that eye candy. I didn't pay the money I did for that card to have all the distant textures look blurry.

Ok then, fluff may be a bit harsh:) but it's like you say, you can sacrifice frames for quality and I paid a fortune for my card at the time and normally I'd agree with you. It's just that the game has so many marks against it already so any frames you can get back are worth it. Once you get used to how good it looks, the novelty doesn't last very long anyway.

There are some much better choices for what you're probably going to pay for an x1900xtx.

8800gts comes to mind.

For about a hundred to $150 less, consider
x1950xt--still running on all high, but no DX10 compatibility.

These cards are very good, but they aren't going to run ooooooober, ooooober high:
x1950pro
7900gs

The x1950xtx (gddr4, woot!) is a very nice card, but for the price it isn't any competition against the 8800gts unless you just can't stand nVidia.

And for pete's sake, put a high quality, quiet cooler on whatever you get so you aren't confusing your graphics card for an incoming APC off to the left (or wherever you put your pc).

Besides that, you can eek out another 10-15% performance boost with an aftermarket cooler.
