Give it some time, learn the skill of the weapon, try single shot, try all of the weapons and evaluate them. I started off really bad too, but then I started to unlock weapons and get into some awesome squads, my points went way up.

Also learn the maps... I play on Infantry Only servers, one map to learn the layout and then move on. Support is nice to play as you have armor on, the weapon is good and you have plenty of ammo per clip. Like others have said don't rush head long into battle. Lay back and get a feel for the strategy of the map. Then you can figure out what to do as the battle progresses. Ping is also important as stated. Also consider a Nosrtomo game pad. Very configurable, to the point that once I am in the game I never touch my keyboard. Look at the mouse sensitivity... if you find yourself turning to slowly consider bumping that up some. What color is your cross hair? I personally go with bright red so that it stands out on anything. Nothing worse than losing your crosshair as you move it over some odd colored terrain...
Assault - G3 rocks. Single shots though, Auto seems to be inaccurate but feel free to switch when enemy's up close but watch your rounds it goes quick. I use the weapon for sniping too (single shots).
Find smaller servers running 16p infantry only. I don't know how your basic aim is, but if it needs improving that's the first thing to do - learn to aim for the head and so on. Also watch some pro frag movies to learn how to use burst fire with AK's. Then play more intensive IO and learn to move and jump and throw grenades the right way.
And really, you can keep playing 1000h on regular servers and learn a little IO combat, or play on a small IO server, probably unranked with right company and learn more in 50 hours. That's what clans are all about, they don't play much, but they don't waste their time on wandering around the maps or getting killed by random tanks, snipers, camper, claymores and so on. Just pure AK vs M16 infantry and you'll make progress very fast.
Remember, it's not about winning or killing, it's about learning. And the hard fact is, those who learn faster own. So before you go to sleep think of things you learnt today and how they work and how you could improve. Believe me. I've seen guys learn in two weeks something which took someone thousands of hours, just because they know how to learn.
Ping also plays a huge part... you aren't playing on servers with 100+ ping... are you?
I second this. Ping should be your first priority. If the server doesn't recognize your shots because you're lagging, no amount of skill will help you.
My 'skill' in combat increases with a good ping and decreases significantly with a crappy ping, or lag spikes.
Also, a crappy computer with an insufficient video card, high-graphic settings or low RAM will also 'lag' you, causing your FPS (frames per second) to drop, and may cause you to over-correct your targeting (wasting valuable time in a firefight) and you die first.
There has been lots said about the scope of the L85. The word "goofy" comes to mind, but then again, it works for some. For me, what works the best, is to never use it. The L85 is awesome at close range, when you've been surprised and have no time to think or react. Just aim and blast away. Its much like the AK in this respect. Do not right click and go to scope, ... ever. This is a really good weapon if you don't. Even from a distance, don't use the scope. Take aim, and hold still until the cross-hairs go narrow, then take a 6 to 8 shot burst. It works really well, and always, whether close or far away, aim for the head. I like the L85, but like all but one unlock, it has its weaknesses.
Funny thing about unlocks, I worked really hard to get them, and then once I had them all, and tried them, and learned their strengths and weaknesses, I realized that overall, in the end, I was better off with the stock weapons. There is only one unlock I have yet to figure out a weakness for. Other than that, learn to get good with the AK or M16, and make staying alive a priority. I would suggest the medic kit, mainly to heal yourself :-) One thing you can count on, the more you play, and the longer you do it, you will get better. I looked at your stats. I started just like you, it took a lot of effort to get my overall KDR over 1, and you will learn tricks along the way to do that. So, dont worry about it, keep working on skills that will give you the edge. Like shooting from behind cover, or anticipating what the enemy will do, and be there, ready for them. (thats a big one) There is lots of advice people can give you, but none of it happens without practice, ...and more practice, ...and ....
Cone of fire is the issue. This makes for your bullets to go any place within that cone so your shots are random. It is the noob factor of BF2 to keep players from using skill.

PR just added it back in. It feels awful now, you just can't hit anything. Nothing feels more stupid than firing a burst off the cuff straight into enemy's head, see brains flying and nothing happens because of great random deviation while walking. Man it feels stupid now. But yeah, play PR and you'll remember how important it's to stay alive.
