EA gets hit by the karma bus: BF2142 sales

The other day I was reading a thread on EA official forums where somebody who bought BF2142 was saying something to the effect of "everybody says we should boycott 2142 and then we all go out and buy it, so it's our own fault that EA treats us like crap"

Having NOT bought 2142 myself, I decided to do a little research into it and discovered to my utter joy that he was completely wrong. The community most definitely has NOT embraced 2142 in anything even close to the numbers that it jumped on the BF2 bandwagon. According to Next Generation, BF2142 came in at #95 on the list of 100 top-selling games in the North American market for 2006, with only 220,000 copies sold, and $12 million in gross revenue. That's counting Oct, Nov, and Dec, 2006, whereas BF2, after only 2 months on shelves, had sold 1.2 MILLION copies worldwide--so unless the rest of the planet has bought a million copies of 2142, then it looks like Dice/EA are getting the pounding they deserve!

There not bad company(s), it's just they made some poor decisions with BF2.
They gave us quite a few expansions & booster packs & the # of people still playing BF2 is a testament to the fact that EA & DICE are both fine companys that can create some amazing games.

Funny how someone can hate a company yet still play there games...hmmm

I won't comment on Dice specifically, because I don't know how much of this BF2 fiasco was their doing versus EA. But I would HARDLY describe EA as a "fine company"--just take a look out there for what most people in the industry (including their former employees) have to say about them.

And the fact that lots of people still play BF2 is not a testament to quality of EA, it's a testament to the quality of BF2's gameplay. EA is a publisher, nothing more. They have about as much to do with the quality of the game as Apple has to do with the quality of the music on iTunes. BTW, the creation of BF2 wasn't even fully Dice's doing--they had Trauma Studios (the guys who made the Desert Combat mod) working on it until they decided to quit and form a new studio (Kaos).

Lastly, I can't speak for other people, but I myself don't play any other EA games, and don't plan on starting, either.

Well, 2142 is basically a $50 mod for BF2. I'm not too surprised. I wish more little kids would play 2142 instead of "reverting" to BF2.

Good. The only way developers learn is by hitting them in the pocketbook, and taking your dollars elsewhere. I can attest that 10 of my friends who bought BF2 DID NOT BUY 2142 because of how EA handled BF2. That's 10 sales that I know they lost.... how about their friend's friends? It adds up.

I was looking through that list to see how well Special Forces sales were. I wonder if more copies were sold of that then 2142. It would be so amazing if SF did better.

I bought 2142 and I love it. Yea its a big mod but Titan mode is awesome, the unlock system is far more intersting and complex, and it is far more infantry centric. I do miss flying but I dont miss constantly having bombs and artillary droped on my head.

After only 3 months on the shelf, BF2142 was marked down from $50 to $40. I wonder why......
