I have had the same problem, and the solution that worked for me is quite simple:

I had forceware 91.xx in use which had worked perfectly fine before with both BF2 and 2142. Now BF2 wouldn't start up anymore, CTD right at the start with short display of a black screen.

Deinstalled 91.xx, installed the new forceware 94.24, and now it works.

MY budd is h aveing there very same problem, but he is using ATI and he has updated his drivers, any other ideas?

I had this problem and updated my chipset drivers. Stopped ctd and freezing issues i was having.

Its Bf2 dont even bother trying to fix it. I have same problem for about 2 months now, started with new install of windows, updated drivers, new power supply, crossfire setup and it still crashes. Its time to move on.:salute: Every other game I play runs great, so guess dice needs to figure it out.
