  • CTD Right at start - dont even make it in.

Been running 1.41 for some time now with very few ctd's, pretty stable overall.
Singleplayer being less stable for me than multi - very rare multi crashes.

So to my disgust this morning I find that BF2 wont load up at all...
I get the first splash screen before flipping into full screen mode, screen goes black like normal, resolution change click noises - all normal so far - then, 2-3 quick resolution clicks and back to desktop I go...
It does not matter if I try to enter through GameSpy, dt icon, ect... results are the same.

I did a uninstall and reinstall, tried loading it up with clean install version... same results - right back to the dt.
NOTE.. I did run the "uninstaller", but I left the profiles in place.

I have not messed with video drivers or anything else, just reinstalled BF.
(because everything else seems to run normally.. FS, UT, MOH, etc..)

    Also... if it matters...
Last night, MS's Flight Simulator CTD'd on me (it happens from time to time).
FS will still load up and fly along just fine now though...
Any chance FS did something to upset BF2?

Anyway, I'm out of ideas... here is My Documents/Battlefield 2/dmp...
    Anyone know what it means??

    Thanks for reading.

Re: CTD Right at start - dont even make it in.

First possibility (and I know I say this one often) Power Supply dying. the second higher power is called for from the graphics card, the power supply doesn't have enough. Normally this would just be a complete and sudden shut down though.

I would try this first. Move your Battlefield 2 folder out of your My Documents folder (don't toss it) and then try to start the game. If all is now well, then your profile stuff has a corruption in it and we can work from that point. If it still doesn't work, I would suggest trying to update the video card drivers with the most recent update you can find online.

Delete your Video.con file in the profiles folder. Every one of them. Clear your shader cache. In fact, delete everything in that folder except the profiles, and in the profiles, delete all video.con files.

Can you try using a disassembler/debugger to find out exactly what the f*ck Dice were thinking when they ****ted out the user interface for this game?

Nope. No luck. I move the BF2 folder out of MyDocs and it created a generic new one, and still dropped back to the DT.

What refresh rates are you running? Set your resolution to 800x600@60hz and see if you can get in.

Re: CTD Right at start - dont even make it in.

Ok, fooled with refresh rates, updated drivers, cleaned dust bunnies from everything, including power supply - everything else works perfectly fine and BF still drops out soon after the spash screen, basically just as soon as its getting serious about loading.
I'm left with thinking its a software issue... hell, its not even making it into the menu screen.

I'm out of ideas... does anyone know what that dump file means??
(Or who at EA could I forward it do?... it has to make sense to someone.)

Try changing the compatibility to windows 95 or 2000 its been said to work. If it works and starts up good shut it down and disable it again

                  Compatability? Where?

Right click the icon and go to compatibility at the top

Re: CTD Right at start - dont even make it in.

                      Ack.. nothing.
Even firing it up in windowed mode... it just disappears.

This is aggrivating... I have not changed a thing, and it didnt even die in the middle of fraggin... working fine one day, dead the next (with no system/driver/hardware changes in-between).

                      Any more ideas?

                      Oh... p4 2.26, 1gig, radeon 9800 256mb, all on a msi 865e mboard.
No other problems besides bf2 - even with a re-install.
                      Registry issues??

                        BF still dead here...

Anyone know who I should have look at my load of DMP files?

Are there any files in the window/system32/dllcache folder that I should try deleting?

same problem here, I installed a 8800gtx and the standard drivers then the updated drivers and nothing, but 2142 starts up fine (dl'd version)
