      $100

I have the Gamer one and there is 3 modes. Gaming, Music creation, and Theater mode. I use all 3 all the time.

Doesn't it have a processor of it's own and uses LESS resources than on-board sound? That's what I thought.. Even on ultra high.

BTW the difference between the software and hardware setting is HUGE, so if you're running software->high, then it's not even as good as hardware->medium.

I use ultra high with a X-Fi card. It saved my "life" countless times when somebody tried to sneak up on me.

I love it because If you stand still and everything is quiet, you will hear people all over, and you can just listen to their footsteps and follow them.

What I think actually happened, was since X-fi was having all those advertisments with EA and stuff, they were probably paying EA some big money to advertise for them, and that's why only an X-fi card will get extra high, and it gives you a HUGE advantage.

I used to use medium on software with my old computer, which had a bug of hearing the enemy artillery firing, a very handy thing I miss now that I have a X-Fi running ultra high hardware settings

The differences i've noticed is strange and creepy ambient noises (only really notice those when your sniping and it's quiet) and the sound of crunching grass as your walking seems to be crisper

i just checked that out, that is pretty freaky! what the hell is it? sounds like someone giving some sort of speech in a very bad microphone.

i never really noticed the nature sounds of bf2 till now, because i never really have my volume high and i always play with music. Really interesting stuff!

o and i run it at high, wont allow ultra high.

                  Re: BF2 Sound Quality

I use an X-Fi Platinum on HIGH with EAX and set to Hardware.

There's some difference with ULTRA HIGH, but not enough for the few frames I gain by setting it to HIGH.

I also switched from an X-Gamer SB LIve to an X-FI, only because when I built my machine in April for BF2 it didn't support the older Creative Cards.

I skipped over the Audigy series completely because the games I was playing were older and there was no advantage to the Audigy series (for me).

My good old XGamer Live, stood me well for many years

I've found sounds are huge in FPSs and really any competitive game. Even when I sim-raced, it was great to be able to tell if some one was attempting to pass on the right or left, rather then glance in the rear view mirrors (most serious sim race leagues restrict everything but incar views).

It's almost "unfair" the way it's an advantage. From a vehicle I can hear the rustling of people's feet. Yesterday I got out of a vehicle and killed an AT infantry as he just took out my vehicle. I heard his foot steps twice and decided to be cautious and get out.

One really shouldn't be able to hear that accurately foot steps while in a vehicle, but there's just so much they can do directionally to restrict those type of things.

I remember "fixing" onboard sound for a friend when we were playing RogueSpear. He had an obscure sound chip and he wasn't very adept at hardware type stuff. It took me a while to find the drivers and tweak it. Once I did though I remember his reaction. "no wonder you always pull a 180 and put on in my head".

The reason only an X-Fi card gives you the Ultra High option is simple: it's the only series of sound cards capable of producing that many voices at once. It had nothing to do with advertising or money. It's technology.

There isn't much difference from high to ultra high but its a huge difference for me from medium to high and up.

Once i got my Xtreme music card its like a heaven, like on karkand i can hear shots going on at Cement factory, while im at Suburb, if its quite enough(meaning radio) u can hear exacly from which direction enemy is running from, with that surround sound stuff :P. people think its hax.
