Moving to Joystick from mouse - advice needed.

Hi,

I don't consider myself a good pilot in all honesty. Sure I'm better then most who normally take the jets but at the best of times I only manage a kill streak of 10 to 15 before I'm taken down. Thing is I'll be up in the air getting some good kills in whatever Jet and then I'll be locked on to and then taken down relatively quickly.

I'm flying with keyboard/mouse at the moment and in all honesty when I have to take evasive maneuvers it doesn't really work if someone who knows what they are doing is behind me. I sometimes switch the aft/pitch controls to the keyboard to give me more of a chance at turning but it doesn't work.

A few months ago I bought a Logitech FF 3D Pro Joystick and I tried a few rounds of flying with it and I was rubbish. I couldn't control the plane that well and I didn't like it.

I was wondering if someone had been in the same position as myself and if they'd be able to give me some advice on how to set up the controls and some general tips on getting to grips with using the Joystick.

Hopefully I'll start to get used to it, and I'll play in some empty servers to get the basics right, but obviously a few tips from someone who's been there and done that will be a huge stepping stone.

Sorry i'm a mosue and keyboard man but Maybe turn up senstivity up? sorry I think there was a thread called whats your set up with people posting there joysticks and how they have them set up some where..

I've got a Logitech MX 518 and it becomes annoying switching the sensitivity up in game. I forget to switch it back and then I can't aim at ground targets as effectively.

I did have a brief search before this thread, but couldn't really find anything applicable to what I'm asking.

sorry dude don't fly then. I've been using mouse and K/b since day 1 and have no problem holding my own. Mind over matter dude, you let all the peripheral jibberish get to your head. What is your pitch/yaw, and sensitivity set to for jets? I can almost guarantee that's your problem.

Well they are set to default, but I can change it in game on my mouse. I can hold my own against an average pilot but as soon as someone who knows what they are doing is behind me, more often then not I can't evade them.

Keep practicing, the rewards will pay off. Joystick does definetly give you some more control.

I was in an empty server earlier practicing when all of a sudden it went ranked! My bombs seem a lot more accurate as I'm not flying around at warp 10 anymore, but I'm also forgetting to adjust my speed to suit the conditions. I'm finding that I'm setting it to roughly 600-700 knots and then when I'm in combat not changing it, trying to perform a move and then I'm looking at the fish in the sea!

Thought I would update this. In a short sense, if you're thinking about changing then do it. It's really that much better. I'm getting KDR's now of 40 odd to 5 in jets

Personal experience over long time speaks this- when put into a 1:1 situation with similar jets- no M+K or K+K pilots come near, they simply do not have a chance. The only time a M+K or K+K pilot has downed me was when I had a ****ty plane and they had the killed beast (when Im flying with F35B against a MiG, J10), and that isnt even a rule, but they often just were right enough beside me to down me. Before patch 1.2, that almost never happened.

When I switched the tables, any M+K, K+K pilot Ive met never stood their ground. Period. The hardest targets, and the pilots who handed my *** over to me have always been joystick pilots.

Many people say that controls dont matter, and I agree with them, because even though I presented you that record, it doesnt mean much because I havent played with the best non-joystick pilots, and some non-joystick pilots have given me a hard time. But fact cannot be ignored, generally, as a golden rule, joystick pilots can do more and usually will do more.

I started up with M+K, moved to K+K and then went to J+K.

Heres my advice, dont practice "flying", do something obvious that will train your flight skill subconsciously. I got used to a joystick in 2 hours flat. I just practiced bombing. Keep bombing in a LAN server until you reach desirable level, once you finish, you will find that youre quite used to a stick. Repeat if necessary. The joystick has an issue, its ****ed up hard to get used to. You will constanty over-roll, overturn and use dumb and stupid maneuvers kile pitch down-full-loops, this will go away soon. You need to reach a certain point in your practice, after which you will skyrocket.

I have a control setup that will do very well for you since it uses KB aswell. The next thing is to change the spring in your stick if you feel like its too rigid. But that comes after you geta good feel with the stick.
