OK - so is it possible to have a joystick set up for jets, while using mouse and keyboard for everything else - or would a joystick override my other controllers at all times? i.e. can I map keys and controllers just for flight?

I still suggest Qtracker. That way, if you still have a good link to the Netherlands, you can jump on some dutch servers.

you can setup the joystick for just jet and choppers. you'll have a tab for the jet setting and a tab for the chopper setting. you'll have to setup both for the joystick. mouse and KB for everything else.

I had real trouble flying the jet by keyboard so I bought a Saitek stick for flight control. You can still use keyboard as the main controls don't change.
I still use mouse/keyboard to fly choppers and click invert mouse so it will do right. Here is a screen shot of my jet controls.
