    Re: The Truth About CAL

Well the difference between us is our playing styles Dairuka.

You are more the type of player that moves with friendly forces in the forefront of the fight (or so I would imagine based on your own words). I call this type the Designated Marksman, the sharpshooter of any platoon which is in the middle of fight.

The Designated Marksman typicly works between distances of 0 - 200 meters max. Gets lots of kills, kill damage assists, claymore kills possibly, flag caps/assists at the exchange of a lower kit/rifle KDR (more deaths).

I am more the type I call The Scout Sniper. I work distances between 150 - 450 meters. Fewer kills, more kill damage assists, the odd claymore kill, more flag defends (sometimes flag caps when neccesary) with the added bonus of an higher kit/rifle KDR (as you can see in my sig).

Because I take the longer shots I have to compensate all the time when I acquire a target. And not only for bulletdrop but also traveltime/lag I have on a server. Needless to say I want to increase my chances on getting a Hit.
On the other hand I have been doing it for so long now that is has become second nature. And I work some fixed positions on maps so that makes it also easier for me to compensate on the fly.

The Pistol is under appreciated imo. I used that thing all the time back when I played lots of Ghost Town and Devils Perch. But not the way most Snipers use it.
Usually Snipers use it to finish a target when they get a bodyshot in. I used it the other way around. I first tapped a couple of rounds of into a target, thereby decreasing his health below 90. After that I switched to my M24sws and finished him of.

The thing is that most people just hit the deck after that minor damage and look around (seriously this happened 75% of the time) because the damage could have come from any kind of weapon in the game.
If you fire a round of .308 into somebody he will know for sure it is a Sniper that is firing on him because it is the only weapon in the game that deals that amount of damage. The first thing they will do then is go for cover and ruin any chance for a second shot by you.

Yeah that Engineer part aint far from the truth btw, I am an Urban and Rural Planner working for the city of Amsterdam atm :)

Well seeing as snipers do almost nothing to help their team, I'm not surprised your not interested in competition. The best part of competition is the teamplay and organization, something snipers hardly take part in.

The greatest weakness of BF2 in competition, is the fact that not every kit meshes.

                Thats called Imbalance.

You confuse Players with Kits. A Kit is a selection a Player makes at the start of a round. How he goes about using said Kit is up to the Player.

I have seen all kinds of Players using Kits and not having the first clue about how to employ it in the field. Medics running by injured teammates, Supports looking daft when you request ammo, etc. Its not restricted to Snipers.

Not that I feel obliged to tell you this but I have been playing in competitions on and of the last year with several BF2 clans in just about any league we have over here in Europe.
In some cases I was asked for my expertise with the Sniper Rifle. In other cases because I make a damn fine medic/support with sound squad level tactics and teamwork on my mind.

You shouldnt be so quick to jump on anybody on a forum, because what you think you know is usually half the story.

All I know is that snipers generally sit on roofs and don't doing anything but get about 7 kills around, all of whom are promply revived. Usually the team with the most snipers on it loses. Snipers are very very rarely used in competition.

                      Re: The Truth About CAL

I cannt speak for all snipers, but I dont think I fit the stereotypical description you just made. And by the looks of it so doesnt Dairuka.

I do agree with you that a lot of the snipers, or whatever they are trying to do with the Kit ingame, have indeed no added value in the average public game. They are trying to do stuff which is either better left to assault/support players or they are in some weird position on rooftops and stuff where they cannt make any impact on the game.

The times I played Sniper in competition was on maps like Kubra Dam and Gulf of Oman. They are both ideal for sniping in the 16 player map version. When I was on top of my game I held back an entire squad at the top of Kubra Dam with the SVD. One of my best moments in the game and compo.

Anyho I am not here to convince you of my own abilities. I know I have an impact on the games I play either in pubs or compo's. Thats enough for me. You just have been unfortunate not to play with some of the better snipers out there like Books_DCDF, ChikyuuShoujoArujuna, dont_be_ss, Mj. Blindfish, Vspyvspy or Chillin&Killin. To name just but a few.

What was this; 5v5, 8v8, none of the above? Honestly in either situation, the other team must have been terrible for you to be able to do that.

That level of the game is beyond them. Most people who are new to CAL don't do to well at the beggining because of stress and presure they were not exposed before in BF2.

Dude, I did a season of CAL open, what your saying is probably true for CAL main, but CAL open level average skill level is not much different than the pubs

CAL open is just like a bowling league, amybody can join

6 vs 6, they only had the top section of the Dam and where trying to get to Construction. I held them back for a minute before I got reinforcements backing me up from Construction. I had some medpacks and ammo bags behind me but I only used one medpack before they disappeared.

The other team was ok, but they just didnt coordinate any form of attack. Maybe lousy leadership, maybe lack of experience. Cannt comment on that, didnt know them beforehand. I basicly owned them from somewhere around 80 meters out there. Btw you might wanna hold your tongue before making any qualifications without knowing me.
