Can a server that i own be bf2 ranked?

title says it all really, a friend of mine owns a server and i just want to know if its possible to have it ranked. Any know for certain?

check what? i connected to it with my friend last night and we were both privates so i know its unranked, but is there a way to make it ranked w/o paying a company to rent a server. Since he already owns one we want to run bf2 on there but are unsure if it can be ranked.

No, you can't. To run a ranked server you need to be a "trusted EA partner"... (IE you are a known company that owns a ton of servers and rents them out daily, and you sign up to be a trusted partner or something).

I heard that there exists some kind of private ranked server but I am not sure if that gossip is true

Well there is some other ranking system that exists... separate from EA. I don't recall where to find info about it though.

You can have it ranked by ABR, but it wont give you unlocks/EA Global score and etc.

Go into that server, and if all the ranks are Private, then no it's not ranked.
If it is the rank you currently have, then it's ranked.

Once its unranked, you have to buy a new server since the prices of a ranked is more of an unranked server.
