Re: Newbie to BF2. Anyone able to help me out?

Every server welcomes newbies, because it not only adds to the population, but it'll give them somebody to farm for points. Anybody who tells you different, and that 'their server is special', is just lying so they can lure you in to do the same thing that every other server would do anyways.

My friendly advice to you will come in bullet-form, and it will be very long-winded:

      - Learn the kits.

      - Learn the guns.

      - Learn how to watch your UAV. Red dots give away your enemy's position. Green dots give your squad mates position. A star shows you your commander, and a blue dot shows you the rest of your team. Make damned sure that you don't get so caught up in 'aiming' your gun futilely at nothing, that you ignore your UAV.

      - Learn the difference of soldier clothing. Recognizing the difference between an MEC sniper, from a USMC Medic can be the difference between an easy kill, for a team kill. This is something you can teach yourself by going into the BFHQ hud, and flipping around the different coalition soldier/kit pictures.

      - Learn to stay aware. Keeping a good watch of whats around you, and for movement is a great way to get the drop on an enemy before he sees you. Often you can catch somebody lining up a shot, so you know when you should duck for cover before he shoots. More often, you'll see an enemy run by you, and you'll be able to ambush him.

      - Learn to listen. The sound quality in this game is so superb, that you can judge the difference of guns simply by listening to the shots of them. If it's very quiet, it's a silenced gun like the L9A61 sniper rifle, or the silenced MR-444 pistol. If it's extremely loud it might be the G3 assault rifle, or the PKM light machine gun.

(Additioinal advice) Plus, distinguishing the different sounds of the guns can help you even find where the gunshot is coming from! If the loud PKM shot is louder on the right speaker is louder than the left, then you better be looking to your right. If it's muffled, that means it's coming from behind you. If it's echos loudly, it's coming from infront of you.

(Tip for rich gamers) If you really want to use this to your full advantage, get a better sound system to compliment your gaming.

      - Learn to judge the red marks that show up on your screen. They appear in the direction that you're being shot from. Therefore if you're being shot in the back, the red damage mark that shows up will be on the bottom of your screen. This means you should find some cover, or you should jump/turn around to fire back.

      - Learn how the game is played by watching what other players do, and imitating them. If you're defeated by a grenade launcher, or a 'bunny hopper', then try them yourself. You can even learn how to use it effective, and more importantly, you can learn how to counter it.

      - Learn all the stages. Learn all the roles that your kits offer. Don't limit yourself to one role, or one stage. Don't ever use the excuse that one stage if your 'preffered' stage, because that limits you to only one 'playstyle.' Each stage requires a different tactic, or playstyle for a person to succeed. If you want to become a better player, then you have to learn to adapt to your surroundings, and not fall into a trap of reptition and monotany.

      - Learn to use your surroundings to your advantage. If you can get 90% cover, then do it! You'll have the advantage, and your enemy will have to adjust his aim accordingly to hit you. Trust me when I say this, it's not easy to hit somebody with only a sliver of his body showing up. You can also use your surroundings to set up ambushes. I say do it! Use frequently used corners as C4/claymore traps! Whatever it takes to win!

      - Finally... Learn to be a team player. The entire goal of every round is to win. You do this by TAKING FLAGS. If you turn into another person who just camps in an attempt to increase his kill count, then you will never be a good player. The best players in this game, know that the best way to get points is to run towards the nearest flag, kill everybody on the way, and to take the flag. Lather, rinse, repeat, and collect your gold medal.

Simply enough, the one thing that seperates a 'decent player' from a 'great player'; is knowledge.

Tweaking, and twitch gaming helps, but even if you're poor at aiming your crosshairs properly, you can still win the majority of your 1 vs 1 battles, simply by getting the drop on your enemy. You do this by guessing what they're going to do next, and by setting yourself in a favorable position while they run into your ambush.

      Play smart. Have fun.

            1. Its not easy, to begin when you have found a map or low ping server you think might be ok, click on it in the browser and look at the peoples names- if there is a LOT of people with prefixes in their names (usually bound by brackets, equals or other signs) then its probably not too wise to join...its almost impossible to find one with no prefixes, theres always a few but chances are ones with high numbers of prefix people are mainly experienced clan players.

1a. If you are in a server and find your whole team being totally owned- have a quick look at the scoreboard (hold tab) and click on players, look down the ranks on each team and if the opposing team have a much higher number of high ranks than your team has (usually silver or gold) then just leave, really, theres nothing to be gained by being beat up by cyberbullys, and no things wont change if a new round starts, they like the easy kills they get from ganging up together and the only way to stop dying (and save your KD ratio) is to deny them kills by leaving.

            2. "base raping" as you now know is attacking uncappable home bases - not all home bases are uncappable but attacking the red no-entry circle ones that are is sometimes frowned upon. But not always, you have to read each servers rules- some encourage base raping, others forbid it, its on a per-server basis, eg if you are in europe, all TV2 servers allow it. Sometimes a server will forbid it but if there are no admins on at that time then it can be hard to enforce and people will do it to get cheap kills.

            3. Dont worry about inadvertent stat padding. You have to know exactly what you are doing to stat pad, as long as you dont join K/P servers then you wont do it accidentally.

Re: Newbie to BF2. Anyone able to help me out?

I started a few weeks ago, so I know how you feel.

For one I'd say practice your controls and learn your maps before joining a server.

When you look for servers, try and find one with a rotation, and uses maps you know a little already. I'd say it takes about an hour in each to get the general feel for how the battle plays out in each. Defintely stay away from karkland, and Jalabaahbalahblah 24/7 servers. Those are full of players who do that almost exclusively and you'll just die every few seconds and never even see the map or get a shot off.

I ahve found that playing about half to the time IO servers equals things out, until you get a few unlocks. If you go to bigger vehicle maps, know what the vehicles are and where in single player before joining and start on servers running those maps that aren't very populated at first. You might live long enough to do something.
