Newbie to BF2. Anyone able to help me out?

Hey, I'm new to Battlefield 2, and these forums, coincidentially. I've been searching the forums for info and got a little more control now than I had 20 minutes ago, but finding a server and hopping on still seems intimidating. I've played the single player mode a while learning the ropes, but there is still a lot of aspects about multiplayer that I'm not sure I understand. Therefore, I wondered if there are any helpful souls here that might answer me a few questions. :)

1. What would be the best way to find a decent server (that hopefully has a little tolerance with n00bs) to play?

2. What on earth is "base raping"? It has something to do with attacking the opponents base, I guess, but what exactly classifies as raping?

3. I think I understand what stat padding is, and I'd like to avoid doing so inadvertedly. I read up on the RoE, and the only thing I don't really understand is the rule against playing on "knife/pistol" servers. Why is this not allowed? And seeing as it's not, why do such servers exist?

As for actual gameplay, I'll learn the hard way by getting pwned by my betters, but if anyone could answer these questions, I'd get alot of ground cleared. Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the community. Hopefully you enjoy your stay, and stay for a while !

Question 1. This can be tough. I'd quicklt advise against any sort of '24/7' servers, as these are usually filled with people whom know the map like the back of their hand. Just join servers to your liking, and once you find one you think you enjoy, stick with it.

2. Base raping is basically continually attacking an uncaptuable base (The bases with the circle around them, and a line through them. The ones which cannot be captured).

3. Knife and Pistol servers are not allowed because they usually result in abnoraml amounts of well.. knife and pistol kills. Restrciting ANYTHING in a server is disallowed, as it makes the whole ranking system useless.

1) There is no absolute way to find "New Players" servers. IMO, go to a Straferight server and get in a Squad. It's a double edged sword though, because Straferight servers are known for a high level of competition. But if your a fast learner, you shouldn't suffer much.

2) Base raping is usually referred to as Attacking(raping) the other teams uncapable(meaning no flag)base

just join a server, join a squad, follow them around...if you get xfire, add me, you can follow me around if you'd like.

Wow, you guys are helpful. This is turning out to be a lot less scary than I first thought. I think I'll poke around in a few unranked servers tomorrow, and get the feel of it. Looking forward to a bunch of hours of fun online.

I would recommend following me around, but I suck at this game. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I suck none-the-less and all you would learn from me is how to suck.

I would suggest joining a full server, finding the highest scoring players and joining their squads. Follow them around, because they probably know what they aare doing. That is how you can learn the little secrets of BF2 success the quickest.

Also, learn to adapt. Unlike the simple-minded-single-player bots, some people in this game change their tactics when they get out matched and unless you are able to change with them they will beat you down every time.

Have fun in the game and ignore the flamers.... they were noobs once.... they just don't remember.

Welcome, The only thing I can add that I can think of these guys didnt already mention is that a server that is only half full is a little less tough to survive on than a 64 player server with 60 or more people already on it.

There are several servers that say Noob freindly in the title. These are the severs i started out on and they helped me alot.

A little bit of an over statement. I personally haven't seen a single hacker in BF2. I have seen videos of them but have never been on a server with them. I can't say that about other games though.

And grenades only isn't exactly an accurate picture either. I have seen lots of clays as well. Oh yeah, there is some guns, armor and aircraft used from time to time.

It actually is a great game, there are some flaws but still pretty much enjoyable. Remember to have fun....

Nah, the main reason I quit was because of all the idiots.
