i used to tap it 1 and hold it, and it would hold it, never would open, i seriously have half my deaths from that lol (sniper, top of buildings = lots of deaths :P)

Well the manual does not state that if you press "9" right after jumping, it has no effect.
I remapped it also to my mouse thumb button, but sometimes it does not open when jumping off lower buildings but at least you won't die.

I suggest changing the parachute key to Backspace or some larger key. The 9 key is so small that I often find myself tapping 8.

And make sure you jab it like Hungry Hungry Hippos.

But the parachute sucks, it sometimes doesn't even open.
