BF2 is reaching a saturation point - some players will want to move on when new stuff comes out. others go on to the mods. Others to different genre of games. Others will play less. etc. etc. It's all natural.
BF2 is not exactly dying, but it's summer-days are over and fall is coming.
Personally, after trying POE2 and Hard Justce (Co-oP mod) I find vanilla BF2 boring - same tired old maps, same inaccurate small-arms, same turle-speed tanks etc. etc. Worst of all - the smacktards. Unless I go entirely on foot, I get TK'd deliberately several times every round - just because some stat-junkie is wanting his fix and don't give a rats derriere about anyone else.
The level of gameplay has always been very low in BF2, compared to say DC, but it was OK for a while because it was just mindless fun. Now it's mostly just mindless.
