Welcome to TBF2

VOIP can only be used if you're playing in a squad online; unfortunately, chances are that if you play on the public servers, you won't run across too many units using the feature.. it's more of a clan or group-of-friends type feature. The comma-rose voice commands are much faster and more abundent by a large measure within a round (sometimes to the point of being annoying).

I think for the most part, people here will recommend 2GB of DDR before attempting the 1280x1024 settings (perhaps bump some of your graphics to medium and you might get decent FPS on your PC at that resolution); I don't know for sure tho, but BF2 is pretty flexible with it's GFX customizations.

I play online with graphics set to low and shadows to off. That gives me a big advantage of someone running shadows, because they think they are safe by hanging in a dark spot, but I see them plain as day. So 1G will graphics on low will suffice.

Yes, I did read somewhere that 2GB of RAM is best for BF2. I'll have to wait until my new PC is built for that....Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM. Not much point wasting the money on my (now) old gaming PC.

as for tips..... the best tip for general game play i have learnt is NEVER EVER LIE DOWN IN CLOSE QUARTERS IN FRONT OF YOUR ENANY!!

Coming from CS:S you will first note the different style in FPS. IMHO, it's a better game then CS:S so I think you made a change for the better, that said, enjoy it and always (when available) use the full patch.

Gonna spend $600 on ram? LOL, you won't be ablet o tell the difference between that or 2. Don't toss your money away.

You would be surprised if you get 6 people in a squad odd are 3 of them will have a mic.

First of all welcome to BF2 Community! This is a great place to get your feet wet and learn the tricks and techniques of BF2. I too switched over from CS:S and have not regretted buying BF2, SF, AF, and I'm still on the fence about EF (lol).

I use a mic when ever possible, and it makes great squad play, and also allows squad leaders to talk with the commander without having to type and being killed while your typing a message. I have a Platronics headset and run all my BF2 sound through that instead of my soundcard. It really is a nice feature of the game, but I wish more people used it!!!....sigh....

Your rig seems fine to me. 2GB RAM would be better, and 512MB RAM on a Video Card would make your experience better, but I would not rush out and buy them right away......play the game and see how you like it and at what graphics settings your rig will take. Then base your upgrades on if your happy or not!

many clans offer free TS
we offer free ventrilo
get it and visit out server and we will be pleased to give you some training
(we have several new players in our clan - we all show them the ropes)

if not us - find a good clan to hang out with - there are many

ps
I went from 1 to 2 to 4gb of ram
all worthwhile steps

last 2gb not as much - but still good
make sure you get a good graphics card as well
keep settings low enough to have at least 30 fps (shoot for at 60+)

Certainly will not notice a difference in playing games. But there will be a noticable difference over 2GB when I'm working on my artwork in Photoshop. Trust me I work with some big files and usually lots of them. And then there's the matter of Vista's greedy requirements....Premium needing 512MB RAM, that'll bite deep into 2GB.

Hey, thanks for the offer of help. Once my copy of the game "finally" arrives I may very well take you up on the kind offer. Though I probably will not have a mic as soon.

Any recommendations on mics? kulamonster3 recommends Platronics headset and since I have on-board sound (C-Media 8738) it sounds like quite a good idea.

Do you guys realise that Windows XP 32-bit can only reasonably access 3GB of RAM, so the final 1 GB out of 4GB will more like slow your system down than speed it up!

You need to wait for Vista for your OS to access 4GB RAM (& beyond)

Didn't know that, oh well. My mobo says it only supports a maximum of 2Gb anyway. I think 1.5 is good enough though, too bad i'm running on 768 or something Mb RAM. So i have to turn RAM heavy stuff like texture and terrain to low.

You'll want to make sure that Geometry and Veiw distance is always on maximum (@Klinger)

Geometry - Makes things appear quicker

Veiw distance - Self explanitory
