That is very true. One thing you should also know is to highlight ALL the squads you have (not just one at time), and use the those options that say "Squad Leader, supply drop is available....Arty is available." Those are great. What is also good as a commander, have a mic and tell the squads the second you become commander that you have a mic and are listening to them! You will find that most people in good squads communicate well with a commander. You will have Pilots asking to spot the other helo and armor.

Also, learn the ideal spots to put UAV. Don't just put the UAV directly on a flag. Try to cover two-three high traffic areas with one UAV. Great example is Sharqi. The best place to place a UAV is between the Alley Way, the Survelance Point and City Enterence. One UAV can cover all that area at the same time, where there is a hell of a lot of activity.

Also, learn that you have more then just the 'Q' comm-rose, you also have a 'T' Comm-Rose.

If you are going to run and gun as a commander, stay behind a main force and pick a kit that does not die easy, like Assualt...because it kills a sudden enemy quick and has a lot of armor if someone takes a couple pot shots at you.

Also, there is a magic about Arty. Drop it well before your advance force gets to a flag. Never if your force is near an enemy flag, because they might beable to take it before the arty arrives. You must use Arty though, it can mean the difference of loosing a close game and winning by a small margin. If the other commander is using it, you need to keep their tickets bleeding too. Also, time your arty when your scans are available. Run the scan, then arty.

Be mindful of snipers on roofs of buildings, sometimes, then need supplies too, not just armor.

"trying to run and gun" as commander is a sure way to lose. The 5 components cycle too fast, plus you will lose the flow of the game, and your team mates requests.

Well, you need to come play on a server with me when I am commander then. Because there are some people that can pull it off.

Re: how to get a good commander

First off, get VOIP working if you don't have it yet. Then try to become a regular of a server by going to it more often than others. Learn the other regulars names and if it is clan run, the member names that play on it and squad with them when possible. Learn the server rules (generally short, but sometimes longer rules are available at a website with a forum). Post on the forum to introduce yourself.

Then, let them know you are new at command and would like to shoot for it a couple of times. not only will they not care, but probably help you to do it.

You will still run into people who will start a mutiny on you just for the heck of it. The servers are loaded with people who lack basic manners and courtesy or that are just having a bad day. Don't take it personal or you will just end up becoming one of them.

Edit Add: I too am more of a combat commander when I have to be. My preference is to command, but if the game is close or I can make a winning difference anywhere but an aircraft, I will do it.

Re: how to get a good commander

            1. find a safe hiding spot (away from the action if possible) to command from.

            2. spot enemies for your team(particularly ones sneaking to take an unguarded flag).

3.dont use the arty close to friendly troops unless you know exactly where to drop it and warn all squads before hand.

            4. dont fight or cap flags unless absolutely necessary.

            5. drop supply drops to repair friendly armor

            6. dont spam orders but be able to point people in the right direction.

            7. only use vehicle drops for assisting teammates that have a long way to walk.

            **sry if i missed anything

You most likely droped transport on one of the little punk admins waiting for a jet! I know how easy that is to do as your WHOLE TEAM is in line for the jet!

there is no reason to kick a commander at all unleas ur a complete *******, u sound like you were doing your job so the admin must have been putting his powers to use

awesome commander right there, also drop supplies next to your armor, ull most likely have to do this on maps like karkand and jalalabad, tell people to squad up and stay in contact with them, if they capture a flag say thank you

it means alot to some players trust me

also try to cover multiple flags with one UAV, on jalalabad u can cover 3 flags with one UAV

DO NOT DROP CARS ON YOUR ENEMY

I believe rocketchild mentioned most of this too, well good to know that there are some good commanders out there

Added to the decent commanders quote should be VoIP is a nesscary tool for BF2 in all teamplay aspects. As commander it is very useful e.g "na its not ready yet mate, gimme 2 secs" or "I just died, there's someone in our main" or "anybody want bla bla bla"

I'm not sure why you would need to drop a transport right on top of, or next to a bunch of jet campers?

great tips for commanding above. Thx!

Thanks, I try to practice what I preach as much as possible, unless Im being shot at...then I inform all my SL's of that and they may have to wait a few seconds until I kill the SOB thats tryin to kill me....or they have to wait 15 seconds for me to respawn LOLOLOL

apparently some dont like the way I command though, last night on Wake, I was commanding USMC and we had all flags accept North Village, we had 240 or so tickets and PLA had around 35 tickets.......a mutiny was brought against me but only 2 yes votes hehe so I stayed and collected my 2X points

some folks just dont know a good commander when they see one

By your reply, I am sure you don't mind losing the game if you get to fly a couple of times.......no need to cap flags and help team mates win the round.

I just assume that they don't want a transport if they are camping for a jet. Therefore, I don't drop them one. Seems I would just be wasting it. I mean usually there is a jeep close by the jets somewhere.

I do however save the transports for soldiers that are out running their buts off and need a lift, or if they ask.

Re: how to get a good commander

I often play as commander, I'm quite experienced (gold commander badge, around 20,000 commander points, playing since release etc) and I would say i'm a pretty good commander. But when playing on some clan servers it is comon to be kicked by OTT clan admins, normally because you are mincing their team or not complying with their ideas of what a commander should do.

The worst servers are the ones that say commanders should just sit still in a quiet corner of a map. THis is fine, and i agree in certain respects, a commanders primary focus is to command the team, fair enough. But I also like to be usefulto my team and deffend a flag, commander toys, or even vital partsof the map (such as the bridges in Karkand). This can be done with minimal effort between commanding, often with claymores or mines. Its entirely possible to help support your team while commanding, as long as you priorities your commaning role and dont put yourself in immidiate danger (and leave your team without a commander while you respawn!).I'm tired of being called a bad commander or being kicked for doing what I do well by ignorant gamers .

The worst example I have ever seen of micro management servers and Over the top admins was when I kicked for was for killing an enemy (witha claymore) while I was commaning! I was actually complying with the server rules of staying in one quiet corner of the map , commanding full time and I got boted because one of the claymores i had set to protect myself went off as an enemy tried to sneak up on our Red circled base! It just so happened to be a server admin who was the victim and probabl out of spite banned me withte reason "Commanders command, and do not kill enemy!" LOL How crazy!!?!?!?!

I rejoined and was like "WTF>??" and as usuall i got the entire clan and their friends critisisng me, calling me a noob and all that, so i just left it an didnt bother playing on that server again.

This was on a GER clan server BTW (German Elite something, sorry). tHE SERVER NAME started with [GER] anyway, i recommend avoiding it.

Anyway I think commanders often get a hard time and some genuinely good commanders are often critised or wrongly kicked by ognorant or noob admins. My soloution is simply stick to commanding on good servers (tried and tested regular servers) or using your own server. I rarly go for command on servers i havent played on before, its just not worth the hassle, which means its their loss as they dont get a good commander in the role.

                                Rocket Child :

I am sure that some can "run and gun" as commander. I can't...I try to use all the 5 components as soon as they cycle up. If this is done, there is time for little else.... I have seen many try it and fail. In a close game it is generally foolish. Just IMHO. Good for you.

BTW, I have 117 hours as commander , and 17,617 points as commander.
