After a full session of IO mode, I have *ONE* complaint.

    The battlefield feels sterile.

Not because of the lack of vehicles or artillery... but because of the lack of ambient noise. The sound of far-off artillery and the rumble of 105mm cannon fire makes the battle "feel" more real. Walking down a silent street on a silent map in the middle of the day with the only sound being that of your boots on the sidewalk just feels too "clean" and not like a war.

It would be nice if they could add an ambient soundtrack to the map as a whole, in addition to the position based immersion sounds (the moaning of the bridges, the flys around the dumpsters are nice, but it isnt immersive and warlike).

The quality of the fighting I had last night and the pure squad tactics on the moongamers server were awesome. There is nothing lamer than moving as a 5 man squad across the front lawn of the Palace on Warlord only to have an APC rumble around the corner and wipe you out. A well-manned squad cant stop an APC at 20 yards in the time it takes the APC to take you all out... I <3 IO mode... it's just too quiet.

    Anybody else recognize this?

Well, it's also a paradise for medics. You can easily score high points, without getting a single death

Just stay with the battle and it stays noisy

Nothing. It's just something I've noticed

What on earth does this have to do with the original post?

I agree with consultant01, it is a bit eerie with no ambient sounds.

I haven't visited since the release of the patch and I didn't feel like starting a new topic.

OT: If you think it's quite, put some ****ing music in the background or something, or why don't you just play the normal mode?

EDIT: I found the topic I should have posted in, sorry:http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94717

Listening to music won't do anything to make the game feel more battle-like. It would just make it feel like Unreal Tournament... Come on...

I choose to play IO because I dont like what armor and aircraft have become... a crutch. (I use them too, Im not picking on pilots and tankers... just saying, IO is a nice change of pace.

IO Ghosttown is an awesome thing.

I think its good. Theres something quite errie about running around with your squad only hearing you running or panting. Makes for suspense and makes it a bit more immersive.

Distant firefight sounds or artillery/airstrike sounds would be cool though.

I've noticed it too and to be honest I liked it. That is also one reason I play IO
If you want variety then under Audio switch from Software to Hardware ... ok maybe that was a personal problem.
But man the noises that started coming at me ... it was like I heard enemy chatter from more than a hundred meters away like it was right next to me ... it was so damn confusing that I had to quit the round and change audio back to software. I have some 5.1 onboard Realtek HD audio, might be something wrong with the drivers, but i still laughed my a-hole off because of it.

Yeah, in part I agree that it is eerie, and maybe that's what bothered me... regardless, I was uncomfortable... perhaps that's a good thing. I'll re-evaluate my experience tonight and see if I can try to see it as a positive.

I *WILL* say that the distant CRACK of a sniper rifle takes on a whole new meaning in IO mode.

Yeah, most WWII games these days seem to have a far off artillary shell exploding and some muffled MG fire. I think that would be nice. But, done horribly, it could end up reminding everyone of the scene in the Holy Grail where the frenchmen is listening to powersaws and cats and stuff. It will just be silly. But, i like how in Day of Defeat: Source, you can usually hear the other team yelling when they capture a flag, it's so cool sounding.

I noticed the same thing yesterday, get so used to hearing the arite that you almost miss it. Some ambient sounds would be awesome.

The background music close to flags is cool. Never really noticed it before.
