Yes it is. You could make a replica of BF2142 which works as a mod with BF2. It's just like the EF and AF booster packs.

This debate about BF2 being a mod will break down to bickering about semantics.

It's the BF2 engine with new skins, models, gameplay etc.... If you want to call it a mod (as most people do in the pejorative) go ahead. If you think it has enough content to warrant the title "game". Then go ahead.

Give it a name....

I would say it is a full conversion mod and not worth my money....

Although who knows I may end up buying, but I will wait until after I try Armed Assault and Quake Wars...

For the people who think its a mod your totally wrong. You should play the beta and come up with your own conclusion. I've been playing the beta for a few weeks now and its more then a mod could ever do and offer.

For the people who think its a mod your totally wrong. You should play the beta and come up with your own conclusion. I've been playing the beta for a few weeks now and its more then a mod could ever do and offer.

My own conclusion: is more than a mod.... is a mod with a new name and not for free, that's all. I have test it too and is worst than BF2...

It has the same problems (bugs) as vanilla and has alot fo the same look and feel (buildings and objects). Yeah I call it a $50 mod. I prefer to play the free mods of BF2. They are better, more challenging, and not putting more $ into EA's pockets.

Some of clanmates have played it and ALL have said it's a MOD.

I guess it could technically be classed as a mod, but EA will be sure to sell it full price, so that's another stike against 2142.

I'll have to restart. Basically we should have a clear definition of what a modification is. The wikipedia says the following about what a game modification is.

Mod or modification is a term generally applied to computer games, especially first-person shooters and real-time strategy games. Mods are made by the general public, and can be entirely new games in themselves.

If we are to follow that then 2142 is not a mod because it is not made by the general public. However the flaw in that is that a lot of mods are not made by the general public so the wikipedias definition could be argued. But for the sakes of this post I will assume that it is correct.

So if 2142 isnt a mod what is it?

I would say it is a partial conversion, its what a lot of modifications by the public achieve, they change certain aspects of the game but not all of it. This is what Dice have done with 2142. The majority of changes are cosmetic new models and some new skins, as well as a new game mode however 2142 as well as using the same unedited engine and tools also uses several statics and textures from BF2 therefore it can not be an entirely new game it is a partial conversion of BF2.

Typically, mods are done by third party groups not connected to the original release company. Mods are also usually limited by encrypted source code that prohibits critical changes to the engine being made.

Since BF2142 actually has "new" features not found in the original BF2 source code, it should be considered a new title. EA did this with BF Viet Nam. The engines were very similar, but BFV was unique enough to be classed as a new title and not a mod.

BF2142 is more than just new skins.
