Since BF2142 actually has "new" features not found in the original BF2 source code, it should be considered a new title. EA did this with BF Viet Nam. The engines were very similar, but BFV was unique enough to be classed as a new title and not a mod.

BF2142 is more than just new skins.
I only played the demo of bf vietnam, but wasn`t it just a boxed version of the EOD mod?

Is Quake4 just a mod of Doom3? Of course not, it's a new full game. 2142 is a new full game; yet is using a modified BF2 engine. It keeps a similar look and feel (but updated) to BF2 because EA wants the million purchasers of the Battlefield games to keep buying. The same reason Honda doesn't radically change the Accord- they want to keep the loyal base coming back for new models.

Just because strangers on the Internet here and elsewhere gripe all the time about BF2 doesn't seem to stop them from playing. 90 percent of game buyers have no idea forums exist, most don't have near the problems you vocal fanatics have, and just keep playing and having fun. And like me, they'll happily buy 2142 for more fun.

Good points. I am mainly concerned with the hacks. It`s always nice to play an online game those first few months without worry of the exploiters ruining the experience for those around them. If it is infact the same engine, than won`t the same exploits, bugs, hax etc still exist?

Well since DICE has had a year to work over the engine for the new game, I would hope they did some work fixing big sections of code that are to extensive to fix with a patch. They are certainly aware of the major issues so here's hoping they took care of a lot of that mess. Also, if they did fix a lot of that then it's another reason why it isn't compatible with BF2 and is being released as a new game. I have high hopes and low expectations so I shouldn't be disappointed.

Of course when you compare any DICE game to something like UT2007 (40 maps at release, multiple game modes, top of the line graphics and effects) just about everything pales in comparison, 2142 is a fun game just like BF2 is a fun game, nothing that anyone should prop up as the apex of PC gaming but enjoyable none the less. Is it a BF2 killer? Will it completely destroy the BF2 community as in OMG! Everyone left to play BF2142! – not even, Armed Assault is going to do that

As for the link, if anyone feels the need to use stupid hacks which makes the game look like something from Playskool they’re completely retarded, BF2142 has so many “built in hacks” that you really don’t need that crap, once you’ve viewed an enemy you can track their movement behind buildings and whatnot for the longest time, it’s in the game already!

no..just because it uses the same engine doesnt mean its the same game. a mod requires u to have bf2 installed and bf2142 is its own seperate game

its sortof like how some games use the unrealIII engine or something...different game

Um your theories are shot.... Special Forces has things not found in BF2 so therfore it should be called a seperate game and not an expansion...

It's funny how Colin from dice says in an dicussion about the upcoming BF2142 that they have fixed things in BF2142 so they should be able to implement those fixes into BF2....hmmmmmmm

Special Forces is not a seperate game as BF2 and SF share the exact same source code. SF came with its own disc to facilitate loading. You can play BF2 or SF with the SF disc in your computer and vice versa. Same source code. SF is an expansion pack for BF2 just like Road to Rome was for BF1942.

Your second point does not prove BF2142 is a mod, it only re-enforces the fact the BF2 and BF2142 SHARE MUCH of the same source code. From day one, EA admitted that BF2142 would run on a tweaked/improved version of the BF2 engine.

If anything, BF2142 is closer to an expansion pack than it is to a mod.

To the OP, same engine, new stuff. Makes it a MOD.

So that means....same problems, same hacks, same bullsh*t.

I was using the logic stated above that if a game offerd features that where not offered in the orginal version that it would be a sepereate game...

Hence SF has features not offerd in regular BF2 therefore with THE LOGIC STATED it would be a seperate game...

Exactly....The BF series has been turned into a mainstream money making machine...

I am beginning to think of it as something like the Vietnam fiasco, it looks just like a BF2 Mod with a couple of new features and a different skin.

                        Good job, EA!

I think semantics are getting in the way. Typically, I class a game as a mod if it is created by a third party not connected to the original company of release. IF the original game maker releases different versions or enhancements of the original game, then those releases are expacks or boosters. Sometimes, the original publisher WILL call the new item a mod, but not very often.

As far as the hacks/exploits being the same, well, we will just have to wait and see.

Now I'll buy THAT for a dollar !! I agree with you there. It was discussed as a release WAY to early for anyone to think otherwise.
