    What's wrong with BF2? Nata :P

I was writing a rather lengthy reply to another thread asking if stats changed the BF series. As the reply went in a completely different direction, I figured it deserved its own thread. I get creative writing fever at 5 in the morning so here you go...

Let me preface this by saying I love BF2 because I'm still playing it. Loving the game doesn't relinquish my right to an honest opinion about the game, which is listed below.

    --

There's nothing wrong with the stat system in BF2, it's great. In fact, the game is quite peachy!

What's wrong with BF2 is actually something we'd normally consider a good thing!

    Allow me to elaborate :)

The game has simply became way, way, way too easy. And by easy, I mean e-a-s-y. Every single round that I play, I end up in the top 3. This isn't boasting, showing off, or anything like that -- it's just plain fact. The truth is I kind of suck when I'm put up against really good players. Usually they totally stomp me or atleast even up with me (*shakes fist at AlmondJoy*).

Tactical maneuvers are pointless (UAV, Scan, Commander view).
Moving together with clanmates in formation is pointless (Artillery, Nades, Clays).

Other than the 2 things above, it ends up with a single tank rolling into a flag zone with a couple infantry and maybe another tank there too. If lucky, you get a fairly decent fight -- but usually it's a few shots and a flag cap.

This is why I prefer 16 player maps, infantry maps, city maps. Atleast with city maps you can maneuver around buildings, create perimeter points, place traps, and do all sorts of things that just dont work on other maps or simply don't work as often or as well.

Anyone here who's been a loyal PC gamer for 6 or more years will agree that in comparison to oldies this game plays itself sometimes. Games like Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear/Raven Shield, Operation Flashpoint, BF1942, Red Orchestra, Forgotten Hope for BF1942, Desert Combat for BF1942 ... are some examples of games that took some time to learn.

    Some examples below:
    • Choppers hover on their own.
    • Objectives are little dots in front of your yes.
    • Clicking enemy spotted on a blank area reveals the enemy.
    • Little drones flying the air expose the enemy the entire round, only stopping for a few second intervals to recharge.
    • Massive infantry killing artillery strikes at the click of a button.
    • Birds eye view of the entire map as a commander.. no hiding from him
    • Vehicles are the equivalent of an infantry soldier with 10x armor, 10x power and 10x speed. No disadvantages whatsoever. It's illogical.
    • Aircraft are now supersonic airborne cheetas, which pretty much takes BF1942 and makes the aircraft 10x faster... nothing more. They dont retain any modern day advantages other than speed.
    • Claymore mines. Free kill, drop 'n' go. 'Nuff said.
That's only some examples. There are countless other features that make the game laughably easy sometimes.

Which leads to the constant player frustration. Some people claim it's the bugs, but it's not the bugs. BF1942 had just as many, if not more -- so do all games for that matter.

    Bugs really aren't the problem.

Wave after wave of complaints come in every day.. every week... every month...

    Because *drumroll*:

Players do not have the ability to distinguish themselves.

As a pilot, you're restricted... you can't do any cool tricks. There's no avoiding certain things. Same goes for every single class, vehicles and object in the game.

People complain because there is *nothing* they can do to avoid certain things.

Claymore covering both entrances of Hotel flag on Karkand? Oh well, nothing you can do! :)

Flying a chopper on Daging Oilfields? *boom* No you're not :P

    I should stop here ...

With all of this said, could this be because it's been 1 year into the game? I mean 1 year is alot of time to be playing a game.

    Woah.

Maybe everything I just wrote has been completely invalidated by that one very important point -- the game might simply be wearing itself out.

Oh well, I typed all this stuff I might as well post it.

    Viva la POE2 & FH2.

You'd be surprised the amount of impulsive behaviour you are succumbed to when you sleep for 2 hours a day. This was a brief 8 minutes... a mere fluke compared to the last time I had an urge to build a robot that responds voice commands via PC.

Some interesting points. I agree that it's not bug that ruin this game. It's just not fun. When an APC pops up and theres nothing you can do. It's a game where if you play infantry, your in the wrong place at the wrong time 9/10.

                      Good post.
And what you say it´s true, for me the most annoying thing is to flank an opponent and when I think I will get him by surprise bam...he kills me because he was waiting in a place he would never be...I hate when I die and my stare goes all the way to the freaking UAV.

The other thing that annoys me is killing a sniper and 30 secs to 1 minute later dying with a claymore that he dropped in the middle of nowhere, at least the claymores should disapear when the sniper dies.

                        Re: What's wrong with BF2? Nata :P

I just remember the days of 73 Eastings in Desert Combat and dream of such gameplay with the features and graphics of the BF2 engine.

Nothing like wide open desert with masses of tanks facing off.

Everything is so proportional now. 1 of this, 1 of that.. pfft.. give me 10 of that! Would be great to see 6 fighter/bombers flying together ... or 4 fully loaded blackhawks circling behind some mountains to drop off troops ... or a column of 12 tanks header towards an objective .. or 5 attack helicopters. It adds a whole new dynamic IMHO. Tank formations, flight formations, etc

21CW pulled it off quite well, I had a blast. The tracer fire coming from the 8 tanks shooting in my immediate direction looked freakin cool

On this point the stats system itself is good, nothing wrong with it. The thing is that the stats system encourages selfish game play. It encourages stat-padding, "Vehicle whoring", Claymore spamming (I usually vent me anger on Ventrilo when I get blown to pieces by a claymore). Only non-selfish thing i can put my finger to is repairs, ressupply and heal/revive.

I used to serious problems with APC/Armor etc. when started playing, however over the last six months I have found it easier to avoid enemy armor. I'm not really that sure why, it could possibly be because I know the maps better or maybe another factor.

As it stands if I see armor there is little I can do about (I play as medic more often) and just move on to the next flag.

See, I never understood that. I'll never judge a player for sitting in a tank if he's killing -- whatever works, works.

You think people place claymores for the stat system? I'm a complete and utter claymore whore (I mean, total total claymore whore) and I could care less about my stats.

People enjoy base raping you :) I garauntee that 99% of people don't care about stats. Those that statpad dont do it to get points, they do it as a form of screwing around because it's funny. I'm sure there are a few crazies out there that take game stats seriously, but I promise you it's not alot of people.

EDIT: Oh and the problem with the claymore thing goes back to what I was saying . . . it's just freakin easy. I mean what other game offers you the opportunity of a garaunteed kill like that? Just place the claymore in a highly populated area and go on your merry way. No risk on your part, and you'll probably get a kill or two. It's easy and there's nothing can do to defend against claymores. Hug the corner? Claymore. Don't hug the corner? Get shot for being exposed.

What the two guys above you posted is exactly right.

BF2 is a great game, we just wish it would be more than it is. At the moment, there are no other games like it ... so saying something like "if you dont like it, leave" isn't an option (no one said that yet, but they will.. youll see). We still play, we still kill... but I can tell you that after years of playing BFV, DC, and BF1942 I have never had the urge to post my gripes about them. For some reason, this time, I get the urge all too often.

I personally don't judge either, when I get the chance (amongst the TK'ing) I love to fly attack choppers and jets. I wasn't bad mouthing "Vehicle whoring" hence the quotation marks, its not a term I genuinely use.

Personally I'd say its about 50:50 again I suppose it depends entirely on the servers you play on. I think people enjoy base raping some because they know its frustrating and annoying getting killed before your feet it the floor.

I have to disagree with you here, agreed not every single person stat-padding are doing it for stats, but I'd say the majority are. I find it hard to find stat-padding fun but then again I prefer a challenge in things and each man to his own.

I asked a guy in my clan a direct question the other day about the stats as he always seems to be saying 'I got this badge, that ribbon etc' my question went as follows : "Do you play BF2 exclusively for stats?" to my horror he replied yes. I asked myself why? why is he playing for some numbers on a website, some little graphic on the same website?

Not that my clan mate is in anyway representative of the community. It just amuses me, that he doesn't play for fun.

My intention was that some people place claymores for the stats system in the context of badges.

I agree BF2 is a great and fun game otherwise I wouldn't be playing it. BF2 is missing something, I can't quite put my finger on it but some essence is defiantly missing.
