Its all about the fact that people read the initial post and maybe a few more and then post OMFG I'm gonna kill myself because they are used to believing everything that has been written down. Such rumours would not even take off the ground if ppl bothered to check the evidence, in this case "all EA UK multiplayer servers have been closed".
EDIT: This site should have more European moderators to put a stop to such panic attacks and rumours before they take off.
