If a game is single player, then only one person has to see the destroyed environment. Multi-player means that you have up to 64 people seeing AND changing the destroyed environment. That is a massive amount of information that must be sent back and forth between the pc and the server. I doubt the average cable internet connection could handle the additional packet flow without insane lag.
If they standardize the effects on the terrain and set lofty minimum thresholds, I can see it in Multiplayer. Considering that 6MB Cable internet is getting to be as common as 56k was back in the day and speeds promise to continue to increase...

A handgrenade shouldnt take a chunk out of a concrete wall, but a pack of C4 could breach most cement structures and tank-rounds would punch nice holes in the cement... when you start talking about major data-flow is when you begin to consider destructible terrain. Bombs leving craters and turning rivers into ponds.

You must remember that for most of the cable laid down in areas other than major population centers that an upgrade requires all new cable to be laid. In my part of the world, this will be a major undertaking. It is 2006 and we still have a choice for rotary telephone service or touchtone. Nevermind digital telephone service. And the new VoIP phone systems like Vonage are only available in MAJOR population areas. I was told that it would be 24 -36 months before VoIP phone service would be available where I live.

So, even though 6m cable is showing up more and more, out here in rural America things don't get upgraded until they get broken beyond repair.

I thought VOIP was available to ANYBODY with broadband?

I also thought that rotary phones worked on the same lines as touch-tone phones... When I was a kid we had a rotary phone in my parents bedroom and a cordless phone in the kitchen and they both worked just the same...

lol yeah, I'd find that old cable and get to work with my chainsaw... a few hundred cuts in the old fiber would inspire some upgrades I think.

They have basicly done all this with Company of Heroes. Everything is destructable and the physics are absolutely amazing. It is, however, and RTS (real-time strategy),but make no mistake. Currently I run the game settings at low and off because it makes me lag, but on some of the higher-end pcs (which I will have in a couple weeks), it looks and runs incredible.

They will be able to do it for FPS, it's just a matter of time, we're not that far away than you think.

The ad campaign sure makes you think VoIP is there for anybody, but trust me, it ain't. Oh, I can get the service. I get a telephone number from a city 170 miles away and STILL have to keep my land line phone in case I ever need to dial 911 emergency. That kind of defeats the whole purpose if I have to have both systems.

And yes, the service lines you most likely have support both rotary and touchtone. We have lines down here that only support rotary still in use. Sure, you can put a touch-tone phone on the line, but it can only send the pulses at the speed of a rotary phone.

I could not cut down enough poles or dig up enough cable in this part of the world to even come close to getting more uptodate service.

There is a buddy of mine that has satellite internet because a) there is no cable service within 10 miles of his community and b) dial up speed is 28 to 35kbits per sec. No "faster dial up speed" is compatable. "Old School" dial up!

Think about it, Mississippi has about 2.5 million people TOTAL State population. Our largest metro area doesn't even encompass 3/4 of a million. And on top of all of that, all planned local upgrades have been put on indefinite hold until our Gulf Coast region is restored back to pre-Hurricane Katrina status.

Anyway, sometime it sucks living where I live, but I love Duck Hunting too much to move anywhere else!
