question for BF2 helo joystick users.

i have the evo stick and am fairly good at piloting the chopper in BF2 already. HOWEVER, there is one maneuver that I can't seem to master in the helo...SLIDING. i'm not sure if it's just the responsiveness of the joystick or what...but i can't get it down. if i use the mouse, it's MUCH easier and i can pull it off but i can't do anything else with the K&M so i need the joystick to fly.
my question to any ADVANCED helo pilot out there: are you able to "slide" (aka - strafe) effectively to avoid incoming TV missiles, etc. with relative ease with your joystick? If so, any tips/tricks or advice?

any help is greatly appreciated.

tip the stick sideways. Like this \ or /

that way your chopper tilts like its drunk - then correct but stay tilted and you will strafe

thats the basic

basically - you tip nose forward to go forward - tip the chopper on its side about 15 degrees and you'll go to the side. think of it as a complicated way of hitting "A" while walking.

1) grasp the joystick firmly
2) prepare to rotate the top of your aircraft to either the left or right
3) turn your wrist in a latteral motion as if turning a doorknob.

I think the term is "Cross-controlling"

A situation where controls are crossed against each other in certain axis to produce a behavior that is quite extreme.

I have not yet mastered the circle-slide but am working on it with the mouse and keyboard. The main problem is the nose tips almost straight down and you crash.

not really strafing - more like simply turning.

it doesn't sound like he is asking about that - simply traveling sideways while facing forward.

i doubt its a "per joystick" equation. It really is all about practice.

You'll be flying around one day and all of a sudden the physics will seem secondary. It just takes a bit of time.

Fly around in single player or create a local game so your the only guy there - and just fly and enjoy the scenery.

been doing the empty server thing. it's weird because in any given situation, i'm an effective pilot. if you look at my stats, i would think it would be obvious that i'm not a noob. hell, i've even competed in TWL 2v2 chopper matches and done well just barrel rolling, etc. not sure why i never learned this "slide" tactic but it's starting to annoy me that i can't get it right with my joystick, yet i can do everything else effortlessly. this is why i'm thinking it's a joystick issue. in any case, thanks again troybob.

I don't really know what you are talking about... but if this is what I think it is, here:



Roll your joystick (X-axis) all the way to the left (or right), and turn the Rudder the opposite direction to control it. IE, if you are "sliding" left, you would roll left, and twist the rudder to the right.

i think perhaps i'm not understanding. The "strafe" is one of the most simple things to do. I think you're talking about (lets say starting from a complete hover) sliding left or right without moving the direction the nose is facing?

Is that right?

If so - just think of the heli as a plane with the propellor on the top. If you tip the propeller to the side, it will pull you sideways. if you tip the heli back - you will go backwards. Careful because when you do this you will lose alt so make sure to use throttle correctly to compensate.

just push ur joy stick to one of ur side so ur chopper is side ways, then release joy stick cuz if not ur gonna be doing a roll, then hold on to acceleration and some other arrow keys to keep balance.

to answer some questions: i AM talking about "strafing" side to side while keeping your nose pointing straight ahead...in other words, moving left or right in a lateral motion with the helo's belly parallel to the ground. you see it all the time against a good helo pilot trying to evade the TV missiles from an enemy helo. he's basically drifting back and forth. the helo's body is tilting slightly in the direction the helo is moving but the whole time the nose is pointed straight. (and i'm not talking about "circle strafing" where the nose pretty much stays stationary in 1 spot while the rest of the helo is moving in a circle.

i understand that this is a "simple" move to some which is again why i'm wondering if it's a "joystick" issue where mine is just out of whack or if it's the fact that i'm missing some variable when i try this.

anyways...back off to practice :)

I have a joystick but I fly much better with arrow keys.

I can strafe with the arrows fine, it just takes practise.

Answer is, take it easy, the first thing a JS pilot does, it over-steering. Or just pulls/pushes the joystick way more than it needs to. So start slowly, with just a few degrees of tilt. Its friggin hard to get used to, a lot easier with the mouse.
