Re: Why can't I win as commander

I personally like Squad Leaders who make requests.

It saves me from having to make guesses all the time.

Re: Why can't I win as commander

In addition to the other good notes.

Play a round before taking command. If your team blows, forget it, an awesome commander can't make up for a team that doesn't play as a team, doesn't get in squads, has many unskilled players or high concentration of smacktards. If they play reasonably well (win or lose), a decent to good commander will either influence or enable a win. If they kick butt, try to win the commander lotto and go along for the ride.

Also, whatever you do, don't wait for anything. I think the key to being a respected commander is anticipating everything and proactively taking appropriate action. Whatever you do, NEVER use the "XXXX" asset is available. It's tells your team that you are waiting for them to make requests vs. anticpating what they will want or need.

Contrary to some thoughts, don't accept every request from squad leaders. First, they may be asking for something (like supplies) that may be better utilized somewhere else. Consider all things going on with the map. If you deny a request, type a quick chat note or use VOIP and explain why. Note, if you blindly respond to requests, you could also be enabling really bad behavior like the Karkand glitch, artying for TKs, breaking the server rules, etc.

Contrary to an earlier post, DO NOT USE SUPPLIES FOR REPAIRING ASSETS! You should be an engineer kit and fix your own stuff unless it's next to impossible. Your team (armor, AT etc.) need supplies more than your assets. If stuff gets destroyed, it only takes a couple of wrench turns to get it alive. You can get stuff to full health inbetween UAVs and scans.

Also, you don't need a UAV or radar to spot stuff. Whenever available, keep zoomed in and watch important areas. People may be small, but you can see movement. Spot them and see if anyone responds.

Don't spam the spots. Eventhough they don't show up as red dots on the commander screen immediately sometimes (especially after a scan), your team can see them on theirs. They don't fade immediately, so give it a little bit of time before spotting them again.

In addition, try to find an empty jeep or car that no one uses. In this case, you can kill enemies at distances your engineer shotgun cannot reach, and you can also repair assests while still in the commander window.

            Not really.

Play a while as Squad Member, then Leader then go Commander, you'll then know how to work the game and what is needed etc.

Unless you're playing a stage like Mashtuur, where the assets are so spread apart that running back and forth between them serves as a huge detriment to your ability to command as well as to defend any given flag.

I think everybody gets the idea that you have to use foresight at all times. Being an engineer and repairing nearby assets is one of them. I should probably reword my original advice to say, "Use crates to repair distant assets."

Something, which many moronic commanders fail to do, and as a result, leave the UAV broken for the duration of the match.

A commander is only as strong as his strongest squad. quite a few people have already said it, but if you are commanding a team of 16 people and 14 of them are un-squaded... you may as well just Scan and Arty away while trying to keep supplies near the armor...

Commanding a team full of Rambos is like herding cats...

Squads are more likely to work better than a bunch of lame lone wolves. At the very least, you make sure the majority of your team has an extra spawn point, which can definitally help out.

Tip #2: Spot. Spot. Spot. Spot. Spot. Spot. Spot. If you're not spotting as a commander, then you're already a failure in my books. This is the most useful tool that a commander has, as you can act as a veritable UAV without having to worry about waiting for timers, or the restriction of a small radius. Spot every enemy you see nearby your troops, and they will reward you with a fraction of the points they get from the kill they've made.

Tip #3: Use Artillery sparingly. Teamkilling your team just pisses them off. You're not going to get many people willing to play hard for you, if you piss them off. A good time to use Artillery is when you see one lone solider about to be ganged up on by five enemy soliders. Theres virtually 0% chance that he'll survive, and you'll give him the revenge he desires after hes dead.

Tip #4: Listen to your squad captains. If they require a vehicle. Drop one. If they want supplies. Drop a crate. If they require a UAV, assess the situation and spot for them if theres only one or two enemies nearby. If theres a full squad, then spot them all, or drop a UAV.

Tip #5: Hide your goofy arse underneath some cover, otherwise you're going to get Artillery, Cartillery or Crate bombed.

Tip #6: Use supply crates to fix distant assets. Be an engineer to repair nearby assets.

Tip #7: Use Artillery to protect your assets and flags.

Tip #8: Drop Artillery, Cars and Crates on stationary snipers. Your troops have more important things to do than to deal with them. If the sniper is smart, then just spot him, and hope one of your troops catches wind, before he catches a bullet to the head.

Tip #9: C4, or AT mine important back flags. Be prepared to do a little dirty work if it means protecting your team's victory. Losing a back flag is the best way to lose a match.

Tip #10: Issuing orders only works if the squad is willing to listen.

Tip #11: Use a little foresight. If you see an enemy heading towars Back Flag #2, and you're stuck defending Back Flag #3, make sure to shout multiple times in your team chat. "Back Flag #2 is under attack! We need defenders to spawn there before it's too late!" You'd be suprised to find that four or five people actually listen to this, and you'll be pleasantly rewarded when they defend the flag. Make sure to reward them back by dropping a car nearby so they can get back to the frontlines quick.

                    Good advise that!

Number 4 is my favorite, nothing worse than a knob jockey who becomes commandor for his own benefit

I am not going to say you are not qualified enough to command because of your stats, because you have shown the commitment to get your basic combat badges in all the kits, & land vehicles which shows you are gaining a understanding of the "big picture" in this game

I tried commander, got my 4$$ handed to me for a hat, & didn't go back to commandeing until I got veteran in everything

You can benefit from more SL time, the interaction w/ the commander will be enlightening

It is 1 thing to lead, it is another thing to get ppl to follow you, & quite frankly, a lot of ppl aren't going to give ppl in the first few ranks a chance whether they are good, or not

To overcome that you have to lead by example, prove yourself as a soldier, then ppl will join your squad, if ppl see you leading a good squad, they will pay attention to you, & cooperate w/ you when you command

                      IMHO

I agree with everything he said and would add this.

Random people in 30 different servers will not interact with you enough to sustain that level of trust or whatever you want to call it. I would find one or two well manored servers with active admins and good map rotations and a sense of teamplay ("texas...teamplayers..." is a good one, so is Moongamers) and make them your regular hang-outs. Play there a lot and the people will learn they can rely on you (the regulars anyway).

In summary, find a good server and become a regular.

Re: Why can't I win as commander

Too lazy to read the whole thread, so I apologize for points already made in advance. Guide to winning as a CO..

-Don't command actively. Find a good spot to hang out and do your job. On maps like Karkand as MEC, you'll need to C4 ur flag or mine the entrance, loose your main on that map = loose the round.

-Communication. I prefer to command in VoIP servers, you'd be surprised how squads listen to orders when you back them up with VoIP. I've used VoIp at the beginning of the round with no real responses, but by the end of the round I had 6 man squads asking me to spot the 2 guys flanking to the Suburb to kill them and keep our hold on all the flags.

-Communication #2. If not VoIp, make sure you give orders, and make sure you reply to all requests. And give orders that make sense. Dont tell the squad that just took the Factory to fix the USMC arty 'cause they have 1 engy in the squad.

-Spotting. Some pub nubs hate it, but its like having permanent UAV. Don't worry about spotting that lone sniper no-one is near, but if a squad is in a heated battle to take a flag, spot like whoa. Also help that armor out by spotting the SpecOps / engy's / etc...

-Arty. Don't get sucked into dropping it in places like the hallways around the hotel on Karkand. I've managed to put away 20-40 guys a round with arty and not earn ANY tk's. Drop it behind the main action, on their side. Use your 2x zoom to check out any large and active squads they have. Catch them capping a flag, and arty in advance of their position - this is easier said that done, but you can catch them as they hit the next flag. Either way, don't drop it in hot zones, the TK's can cost your team the match by loosing flags / etc... Also, factor in the time it takes to get there. Arty from USMC main on Karkand to the MEC Factory takes longer than from arty to Hotel.

-Supply drops / vehicle drops. I try to use everything as fast as it recharges, and staying in the CO screen helps this. Supplies for SO blowing up their assets or your armor. Vehilces to help squads move about.

-UAV placement. Make note of the size of the UAV circle, which changes on maps. On Karkand32, if you place it so that the entire swing is being used, you can cover the entire Suburb flag and still have a huge portion over the marketplace and train accident areas. Don't be lazy about placing it, and dont accept requests for it (it'll center it over the spot they requested it), take the extra 2 seconds to place it smartly.

Basically, be an "asset" to your team. Don't worry about being a medic on the front lines, sit tight, protect your assets, and use them wisely.

HUGE importance in winning is defending your main on maps like Karkand-MEC, Sharqi-USMC, Wake-China. Loose those mains and you loose armor spawns, airfield spawns, helo spawns, etc... Its your job to rig the flag or mine the area and call for help when a large squad comes.
