    1GB vs. 2GB RAM

To those of you who've run BF2 with 1GB of RAM, then upgraded to 2GB: How much of a difference did you really see in-game after the change?

My unit's specs are AMD Athlon 3200+ Clawhammer @ 2Ghz, 1GB of Kingston ValueRAM, 250GB IDE HDD, OCZ Modstream 520W PSU, and an ATi X800XL All-In-Wonder AGP overclocked to 466 core/565 mem. I usually run BF2 at 1024x768 (any higher res and it hurts my eyes), with all settings on high or medium, with 4x AA, and so far the game looks and runs GREAT. There's no lagging, no stuttering, and no freezing. Everything's smooth with FPS usually in the 50s and higher.

So, what exactly would adding another 1GB of RAM do? Would it mean faster load times, both of the game and of its maps? Would I be able to increase some of my medium settings to high, or are they all GPU-dependent?

Any help is appreciated! I'm just wondering if I should go out and drop 250$ on 2 sticks of 1GB, or just be happy with what I have.

250 bucks? dang, thats a lot. i got 2 gigs of ram for about 150.

load times improve, and also in game stability, less stutters and such with higher settings.

i upgraded my pc because of bf2 from 1gb to 2gb. Main impact are reduced load times of the maps and quicker fallback to windows (once you exit BF2). I don't recognise any differences in game (all game settings are -imo- CPU/GPU dependent).

Why buy another 2 gigs in the first place? Buy one stick of 1GB, unless of course you bought 4 x 512. And if everythings fine, why look for improvements? Be happy that everything works great with no problems.

You will notice improved load times and some improvments in game from upgrading from 1 gig to 2 gig's. Now I would not say to jump up to 4 gigs IMO that is over kill.

By all means though go with 2 gigs, of course it also matters what brand and type you get as well!

Game runs smother and loads faster, but that could of also ben the 4800X2 and the x1900XT aswell. it still loads faster and runs smoother then 1 gig lol

I say don't upgrade the RAM. It won't change almost anything except for loading times etc. Just save some more money for a better GPU, if at all.

Pfft go for another GB, you will be able to then run every at highest

But why buy a X1800XT for 1024x768? Bit of a waste.

im not being funy here and singling you out jaxx but it constantly amazes me how many posts where people say 3 or 4 gb ram is overkill and this is overkill and that is too much youll never need it...perhaps it just cause i come from an IT background, but all you guys should be well enough versed in all things technological with this BF2 game to be aware that you can never have too much kit!!! :-)

reminds me of the statement bill was ALLEGED to have made, did he ever live that down?

                    512 to 1 gig => Big difference
1 gig to 2 gigs => Not so much

                    Definitely not worth the $250.

Overrall it takes out alot of strutter, When running on higher settings. Faster load times.

Glad you guys with less then 2 gigs have convinced yourselves that it doesn't make a difference. Going from 1 gig to 2 gig of ram, does make a big difference in BF2. Now there is a fact

I experienced a decent increase in load times going from 1Gb-->1.5GB. Although I also did a zero-write of my HDD....

Yes upgrading from 1 to 2 gb of memory helped BF2 alot. It loads faster, lets me run textures on HIGH and just plays smoother.

It makes a big difference 1-2 gb but i placed also new motherboard and videocard and makes a bigger difference i have almost no problems with bf2 and always one of the first in the game so i recommend what i did.
