helicopter control impressive

ive seen this ability a couple of times, wondering how they do it? In a helo in bf2, they simply rotate their helo around an opponet in a circle, doesnt apear to pitch in any direction, just circle in a hover position, how do they do that, tried numberous times w mouse/keyboard and joystick, no luck, please help - are the controls for xbox 360 and pc the same, does the 360 controls have an advantage i cant duplicate on my pc? thnks man

Its a trick. Its not a maneuver, its not something you just stumble across, its just something you discover randomly once youve mastered the helo. I have a lot of hours in a helo, and I cant get it to work. I CAN circle around a flag in a very small radius, but not the way some people can, like a mini-tornado. People have posted up instructions on how to do it, but the way they descibe it, youll just lose altitude way too fast...

its a combination of rolling one direction and turning in the other.

Thats my understanding.

I gunned for a pilot on Iron Gator who swirled around the flight deck of the carrier like a tornado, my nose cannon/TV missle was pointed right at the spawns the entire time, it was the craziest move ive ever seen (besides loops and barrel rolls...).

I'd love to know how to do the "Ice-cream cone" move...

It's pretty fun to do. I do it when I repair or cap flags. All it takes is practice

Learn to get the helicopter to slide through the air sideways first. This is done by tilting the aircraft slightly on its side lets say the left side so give it opposite rudder right and she'll slip sideways. If you can hold that steady you're half way there.

To get her into a spin push forward on the stick and you will go into that corkscrew spin. Get into an empty server and practice.

The key here is a joystick, nothing can touch it for control. People will telly ou they can do well with just a mouse and it is true but once you are good with a joystick you'll notice the difference especially in the really violent evasive manouvers.

I can spin around caps or points easily enough, but I don't think I've ever done it so that your spinning in a tight circle with nose down at the ground.

I was commanding on Cleansweep the othr night and was zoomed in on a flag that was being capped trying to spot enemies for my team. I see the Cobra come in to just above the flag and do that very tight spin around the flag. I'm like...wtf....how did he do that? Looks crazy from an overhead view.

can u post what your helo controls r in options for use w a joystick? basicly what joy u use to go forward, pitch, fire and so forth, i have a a logitech force 3d pro joystick and i would like to get squared away on the helo playing w a joystick, thnks bro

I use the same stick and it's fantastic. When I first started flying I used the stick keyboard combo for throttle. I now only use the joystick as once you get used to the throttle you have more control.

Setting what buttons you use for what is your choice. The only thing I'd say is set in stone is the tophat. Use it, set it to use the rear camera and push forward for cockpit as it will switch between cockpit and forward of cockpit. Also froward view help sometimes which is my tophat right and the cinimatic view tophat left. This comes in handy for jets as it can help you locate the guy who blew by you to your rear.

I'll tell you how I have mine however, can't give button numbers as I'm at work and don't have it in front of me.

We will start with the top bottons minus tophat starting with the lower left button going clockwise.

bottom left, alternate fire mode
top left - mouse look I almost never use it as once you mouse look your controls lock so it's more for quick reference or when hovering - mostly my desk isn't big enough
top right - switch weapons
bottom right - flares

That thumb button I don't use in choppers but for afterburner in jets

All those bottom buttons at the base I never use


Throttle, use it get used to it. Fullback in jets is reverse throttle so 1/3 down is zero same as everything else save the F-35 which as you probably know is hover which unless you want to die should never be used.

EDIT of EDIT///// Oh and I can not stress this enough, know the map and area you are attacking when doing this trick. I can't tell you how many times I've smoked a tree doing this. You're looking forward and can't see out the side so there you are looking all cool when the tail hits a tree or powerlines. I have no idea why games I played 10 years ago can allow me to look around with my tophat and not lock the controls while BF2 can't. I would ditch all external views in a heartbeat if that was implemented. I have joy to key but don't use it as what good is it to look around if when you do it you now go straight only?? lame

I can do it fairly easily finally, but it does involve a certain amount of pitch to one side. You're using the main rotor to 'pull' the helo in a circular motion, and steering with the tail rotor at the same time to keep it in a circle. You can let up on the main rotor once you have enough momentum, but you'll need to tilt once in a while to pick up speed. It just takes practice, I use kb/mouse for this and both hands are somewhat busy when you're doing this.

Its great for maps like Oman when the US has one flag and they're all spawning there :)

Are your setting different from default? my settings for the Chopper are default on everything.

errr what re you smoking? There is no trickery involved when flying a chopper. All that is done is recognized to be manuevers. You dont discover it randomely, you just practice it and practice and eventually you bring it to online play.

And qwith this certain manuever there is no altitude lost at all. you actually gain small bits of height when circling a base or group of enemy soldiers.

When I do the cyclone maneuver, my copilot always complains of dizziness...so I don't do it often

I'm guessing the 'circle in a hover' position the OP is talking about is different?

Woosh.. ICEQA did that for me I got 192 Points yesterday on our 32 Wake Server. He can circle strafe it's just unbelievable I gunned everything down and got 192 Points my last record (Also with ICEQA) was 188 whilst I normally find it surprising if I reach 120 on Wake..

Im trying to say that this doesnt come as a result of a standard maneuver, so you cant "figure" it out.

I have 150 hours in a chopper, and I still havent figured it out, without a significant loss of altitude. Just because YOu do it the right way doesnt mean I can do it the right way with ease.

I can do it easily with a mouse and keyboard, with all default settings. The only reason I do it is to avoid AT missiles while capping a flag. It definitely comes in handy when there is a tight space such as a building or tree right next to you. I can spin almost straight up and down when I get going fast, but you need to know when to pull out when you start dropping. You definitely get dizzy doing it, just like Talus said. The gunner doesn't seem to like the move too much. haha

Think of a figure skater doing a tight spin like that. Notice they get faster and faster while the spin gets tighter. The momentum will help you continue the spin so you can left off the throttle a little bit. But you will need to push the throttle to get out.

Does this make me gay for relating helo's to figure skating? lol
