Don't even know where to start, the author is so far off from right on this one. I'd say 95% of clans do a decent job of policing their server, keeping haxors / asshats out, and weeding any cheaters out from their own ranks.

There are the usual gay rules, but clans are what drive and support online gaming, period. Without clan support, competitive play, most games would loose developer interest and die out.

Just like you get a moron you dont like, you get clans that dont suit your taste. This post is an accurate description of whats going on and how things should be.

In the end, youre in their "house" and youre just a visitor.

I know of a lot of servers that are paid for by a group of people, and refuse to let anyone call them a clan.
They simply like to play together, and keep a clean, lame free server running.
Although they are similiar to a clan, in certain aspects, they would rather slit their own throats then to be refered to as a clan.

IF a server is RANKED, then it is OPEN to the public. PERIOD. Clan run servers often fall under even MORE scrutiny due to so much clan hatred in the BF2 community. There are always two options you have as a player.
1. Take screenshots as proof of ROE violation and report offenders.
2. Don't play on that server anymore.

NOTHING is for FREE. IF a clan is being "sponsored", then that clan MUST give the sponsor something, like ad space on their clan website or an agreement to keep the server populated x amount of time or risk having the server pulled. NOTHING is free. EVER.

if you have the money why not hire a server. Many clans play the game right other may not. I had a few clans who call you names but most of them are really good players. I really can't see what you are getting at?

Clans run about 75% of the servers that most pubber like to call home. I don't know why all the negative stigma in the first place. Not all clans are run by nazi-esque 12 year olds with greasy hair and acne.

Yes I know what it is. But as a clan, a ranked server is of no use to us.

1) If you let your entire browser load, I'd say 60%+ of the ranked servers are empty.

2) Clans needs unranked servers in order to do what they do, ie: lock it and scrim without silly stats.

3) Considering I'm on a team that's always borrowing other servers, a sponsored unranked would be greatly appreciated.

Again, giving ranked servers to clans is dumb. They need unranked so they can actually compete (if they didn't have one already). Plus I don't see why it would be bad for MYIS. A private unranked is cheaper than a public ranked.

Let me respond.
1) The figure you quote for empty servers is faulty. Server population is cyclic and rises and falls based on the time of day and where the server is located. Also, since the last patch, the numbers of active players HAS gone down due to CTD and other performance issues.

2) A clan can "unrank" a server at any time for a scrim or tourney. Clans use Ranked servers as recuiting tools.

3) Unranked BF2 servers do not generate a tremendous amount of revenue for EA or the server providers. Unranked servers are mostly used for private scrims, stunt/trick servers or for those wanting to run a BF2 mod.

Again, nothing is for free. Clans are not "given" Ranked servers without the server provider "getting" something in return. Those agreements vary between server providers, but in every case, the clan MUST give something in return.

Clans, for the most part, provide a base population for the server to get kicked off, usually won't run a server without admins present and if they want to maintain their server agreement, run a clean server.

People like joining populated servers, playing in relatively smacktard free zones and will generally return to said server if they have a positive gaming experience.

A ranked BF2 server runs anywhere from $280 - over $300 per month. The sponsors use this to entice more clients. Foot the bill on one server for a clan and out of the thousands of players that visit in one month, only 5 contact the server provider to rent a server of their own. Sounds bad, but $300 vs. $1500 makes a lot of sense. As long as this game is stat driven, there will be a demand for ranked servers and a peice of that cash cow will be fought over by everybody that is in the server business.

Amorphous groups can not provide the stability that the server providers are looking for in their advertising vehicle. Clans can and do.

Our team has a ranked server because we don't want to jump on someone elses server and take over.

All our admins most know and enforce the ROE. Anyone cought cheating or exploting is reported to BFROE. We don't belive in cheating, and all we do is try to have fun.

Not all clans are bad, but there are some that are started and runned by the bad eggs.

I am in [MAD] clan and we do not compete. Think of us as a bunch of people who play as a team. There is a whole bunch of clans that do not compete, but play for enjoyment and team play. We share a ventrilo server with another clan, so we do play as a team.
Every now and then I see that pubers make posts here that there is no teamwork, so I suggest find a group of people that you would like to play with, even if it is a clan, and play the game.

So if you still think that it is dumb to give clans a ranked server, maybe you should think harder. :p

they see you as a newbie and never been there before?they dont want you to see them and they know each other so they vote.walah! your kicked.

I dont trust clans full stop and wasnt the head of my internet caught cheating?so a law breaker can hand out licences

clan invented pixel shooting thats fair enough but i also know they develop ways to exploit the game as seen on 42

there are some good ones out there but less than 50% i think.

The only way you will see such a big price tag is if you rent directly from EA, servers rented from original distributers run about 2.50+ a slot.
