I also am having hard lock-ups and have to restart my computer by pressing the restart button or maybe I get lucky and sometimes can 'CTRL ALT DEL' out. I am very good at building and tweaking computers; built over 30+ custom bang for the buck machines.

The key is when you have that hard lock up restart and hit 'del' button to go into your BIOS. Check your system tempature see if it is real high; check what maximum is for your cpu. Mine for most AMD is 50-55C and anything over than you might want to adjust your cooling.

I still have no answer to the problem and I have even downclocked and messed with ram configuration and location on MB.

I have an Nforce3 MB 2.2GHz and AIW 9800 Pro.

Anyone had this, first time I've had it, but I hope it doesn't continue or if theres a preventation for it. I was on Zatar, and was playing for like 10 minutes, then all of a sudden my game like made a noise like when you hear a noise and it freezes and stays with that noise then 2 seconds later my PC restarted??? I mean crash to desktops, server crashes, connection problem, game freeze and now restarts?

me too, i hear the sound hanging and gone it is, its restarting.

I had this same problem a lot when I first started playing BF2 (back when it first came out). I found a tip that said to turn the AGP speed down to 4X. This completely fixed the problem. I even experimented by turning it back to 8X, and sure enough I would get a crash shortly thereafter. I didn't notice a performance decrease, so I ran that way up until a few weeks ago. Then I started getting the problem bad. I fired up Asus Probe and it was flashing a warning on my 3.3V rail. It was down around 2.94V or something. I pulled the main power connector, blew in it, then reconnected it and that fixed the problem for a while. Then it came back, so I bought a new PSU. So far, so good. I'm wondering if all this time my problem was a weak PSU. Since installing the new PSU, I changed back to 8X and have not had a restart.

This is not very useful as you lose the log/error message. There is a way for you to make it so it dont restart and then you can see the error message

Control Panel -> System -> Advanced Tab -> Startup & Recovery click Settings and uncheck Restart Automatically.
This way you can see what the error is. BTW, w/ automatic restart, the dump is still logged, unless of course you turned that feature off too. Depending on the type of message, it is either driver or hardware issues. High overclocks can result in some data corruption. In which case you will need to reformat and reinstall Windows.

I get crashes all the time with this game. Had it clocked at 2.8Ghz ran Prime95 for 23 hrs and 10 min and was completely stable. About 5 months later started to get crashes. Ran Memtest for 10 hrs and no errors what so ever. Not sure what the problem is. I have an OCZ Powerstream 520w power supply so I know for a fact I'm getting enough juice. No big deal, just restart and get back in. And then I get the CTD, conn interruptions, can't join due to unmodified content... and the list goes on. Sometimes I don't even know why I put up w/ this crap.

well it might be the patch but i dout it cause mine sometimes shuts down the game but never will it restart the computer.

for computer restarts? number 1 culprit is power supply too weak or wearing out
#2 is heat - take off you side panel and get a $9 fan from walmart and blow it right in
#1 and #2 did NOT help me (but a few of our clan mates)
my problem was #3
failing RAM
all other programs worked fine
so, I did not expect it
ran memtest86
got TONS of errors
replaced ram (under warranty :))
and never had a crash since

this is a different problem all together.
