Living in the middle of England with a 2mb connection helps...

I have 'crap' ping on my wireless connection if it makes you feel any better.

<75 ping for me is hard to find.

I live outside the recommended limit for 512 dsl, but due to a miscalculation on BT's part they gave me it (thank god, I could not put up with 56k). I ping at 30-50 on uk servers, and the strange thing is I get equal or better ping than friends on 4-8 meg lines through the same ISP (BT), living 5 miles away or so. I have never noticed friends with higher rated DSL pinging better than me, although this may have something to do with us living in Northern Ireland, I guess the data traveles through the same channel pipe.

having Verizon FIOS (fiber optic) 20mb/5mb service helps, and so does being in NY. Great backbone out of here. I can play on US East Servers and ping under 40-50 all day long.

In CS:S i use the <50 filter and get plenty of responses in single digit pings :)

I get around 30 ping, with Bell Sympatico High Speed, says 10.0 Mbps, seems fast.

I'm on a 1500/256 ADSL plan and have pings as low as 12 and rarely higher than 25 when I play on Australian servers such as Internode and GameArena. If I play on a server that's in Western Australia (I live in Victoria), I might get pings as high as 55. :p

Quite a nice little predicament. Playing against the high-pinging internationals on GA in the early morning hours is sometimes like playing single-player on Easy Mode. They can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn (I see lots of them with pings of 350+ so ... yeah).

Seriously, basic DSL service isn't good for gaming, IMHO. Cable or upgraded DSL if you can't get cable in your area.
errr its perfectly fine man. I get pings of 50-70 on every single server i play on.

On most american based servers i get from anywhere from 30-80 ping. Canada is usually around 100, britain is usually 150, and australia, i usually get kicked for over 200 ping.

DSL is all about how close you are to the station. The farther down the line you are, the slower it is. Also, you can't live too far out in the boonies if you have DSL. Here in Mississippi, if you live in the sticks, it is either dial-up or sat. There is a member of my clan that has sat. internet and barely gets pings BELOW 500 !!

Aside from your ISP, you can also tweak your computer to help with online gameplay. Most comps can download pretty fast, but take much longer to upload (or the other way around). You just need to do some things like increase your packet flow, fool around with the wait for return time (you know that little signal that your system must get from the game server saying I got your info before another packet is sent) and a few other tricks that I am not too familiar with. No, I did not do all of that myself on my system. I had some help from some optimization programs I downloaded as well as a few that an IT buddy of mine let me borrow.

Give it a try. A good place with some freeware is pcpitstop. That is where I started.

Wow, thanks everyone. Excellent responses! Sounds like I might do well to up my bandwidth of my DSL account a bit. I admit it, I was cheap and went with... :drevil: 256kbps DSl- the *minimum in other words. It works fine, but I'd like Pings <100. right now I can get 100 pings though, so it's good.

One day, when I have more money.:ar15:

I get 60 to 70 ping on Quebec servers. I live in Toronto and my ISP is on Montreal. I got DSL. I only get that ping on Quebec servers, other servers I get over 75 but not more than 95.

How much is that per month? I'm moving to Melbourne in four months from Amsterdam. My connection with Chello in the Netherlands is 20 Mbps/2 Mbps. I got the extreme package. :p

I get pings of 25 or less usually around 18 on UK servers. I never understood what 20 Mbps/2 Mbps meant, anyone want to enlighten me?
