My guess is EA is playing it 'smart'. Think about it...they leave a few issues with BF2 that people do not like. People get annoyed with these 'issues' as they cannot be fixed due to the release of BF2142. People go and buy BF2142. Process starts again (yep...can't wait for the bugs they have install for us next time! :) )

I think we can continue to expect patches. The reason is that BF2142 and BF2 use the same engine. So, if there are unfixed bugs in the engine itself then when they are fixed for 2142, they *may* also release a patch for BF2. They seem to want to make more of an effort and it would eb the reasonable thing to do.

I would expect that 1.4 may be the last patch to fix non-engine issues though (stuff like balancing, etc), issues specific to BF2. I would expect that they want to get BF2 boxed off and sorted so they can concentrate on 2142. Maybe that's why 1.4 is going through such a rigorous testing program, so they can ensure it's going to sort out stuff that needs sorting so they can then leave it there.

It is extremely wasteful in both time and resources, and damaging from a PR point of view, to have to fix regression bugs (ie, bugs introduced in a patch) and it seems that EA have learned their lesson so it could be that 1.4 is meant to be the final patch.

Of course I may be completely wrong in all of these points but it's just IMHO.

I am kinda surprised that BF2142 is out relatively soon after BF2... basically about 16 months. The BF2 community is still very strong and ever growing it seems. Most people jumped from BF'42 to BF2 because it was quite a while between games (Vietnam does not count) and of course because of all the new features. If 2142 turns out to be a superior game with less bugs I think BF2 will die off rather quickly and everyone will switch over to the new game. So to answer the original post, I think it depends on the success of 2142-

wat i forsee is the community splitting 3 ways,1 going to play 2142,1 going to play quake wars r watever ts called,and the other satying with bf2 cause they dont like either.

DarkEagle-ftw! totally agreed. they should certainly fix bf2 before they put 2142 out. im talking about the bugs, not balancing waht people think is broken. (some will complain no matter what is done.) DONT GIVE UP EA.

I see your point but if you want to show your support for BF2, then don't buy BF2142.

Its not the end of the world you know, that EA release BF2142.

The release schedule does seem a little short to me. However, remember that 2142 is more of an expansion than a whole new game as it uses the BF2 engine. So basically they don't have to write a new engine as they did 1942 -> BF2, they just have to make some engine changes and design the new maps, etc like they did 1942 -> Vietnam.

It's not so much a progression from 1942 -> BF2 -> BF2142, it's more like where 1942 progressed to BF:V, BF2 progresses to 2142. The time frames are even pretty similar, there was around 18 months between 1942 and BF:V and it appears there'll be around 16 months between 2 and 2142.

I'm hoping that as BF:2 and BF:2142 will supposedly share a lot of code (ie, the engine) then any engine fixes for 2142 will be retrofitted to 2, hopefully meaning that we'll still get fixes for 2. What I don't expect is for 2 to receive any more "tuning" like weapon balancing as would expect they'll want to be done with that as it' won't help them get 2142 out the door.

What we might get though are new features if some 2142 features are tested in BF2. That *might* be why vehicle drops appeared in BF2 when no one asked for them, no one was expecting them but they still appeared out of nowhere.

I do hope that 2142 is more than a glorified expansion though. I enjoyed BF:V but I never really liked it as much as 1942, but then going back to 1942 kind of didn't seem the same after BF:V. Hard to explain that, hopefully you know what I mean.

i guarantee you more people will still be playing bf2 when bf2142 comes out.

I bet you not..BF2142's server reserve list is nearly booked. Its like a brand-new spankin' resteraunt opening, everything is booked. It already has more than 500+ servers reserved. You guys who hate BF2, and are boycotting BF2142, and convinced yourselves that Quake Wars is better represent about 10-20% of the community overall. Everyone else loves the game, but just thinks that there are too many whiners. BF2142 will punish!
