This bad hearing from headphones is bad for me. I was almost born deaf, had to have surgury at 3. Looks like I'm reversing all that. I'm sure in the near future some technology will allow safe hearing for gamers. If anyone actually cares to go out of there way to find that new technology.

The majority of my minor hearing loss is a result of earbuds. It all comes down to volume. It doesn't matter what you use (earbuds, bigass speaker-on-your-head headphones, or speakers), high volumes will damage your hearing. The effect is more prominent with headphones because they don't seem like they're as loud as they really are. And even moreso with earbuds because the sound is projected directly into your ear canal.

Tell it to the iPod users, bitvomit. Vastly worse problem there, with more people at risk. I think that this whole generation who are under 30 now will have implanted hearing aids by the time they're 70, and it won't make a bit of a difference to anyone.

I can't believe that anyone would worry a lot about long term hearing loss because of using headphones while playing computer games, in a society where cars come from the factory with 500 watt amps, where people blast their ears with portable music players 4 hours a day, and where subwoofers are so powerful that they literally move people's hair and clothes.

For these young guys, I'd be a heck of a lot more worried about how they're wasting 500, 800, 1200 hours of their young lives every year, just sitting in a computer chair clicking and swearing and screaming at each other... and that's not when they're downloading a gig a month of porn.

I've had them as customers, the fat, slack, bored, "I'll go to college next year" anti-social computer gamer in a black t-shirt who's drinking a six of MD and 4 bottles of Bawls a night... that kid, the typical CS junkie who plays BF2 to intimidate people and make himself feel empowered, is more of a threat to his own well being because of his diet and time-wasting lifestyle than whatever tinnitus he might develop in 2046 by listening to the UAV lady a little too loudly in 2006.

          In my opinion...
