Re: BF2 Instantly Disconnects when "JOIN" is clicked

If it is a Punkbuster issue and i'm sure we are pretty sure it is. Does anybody know of any ranked servers that are running that dont require Punkbuster.

I can disable Punkbuster in the browser but all the servers i have tried require Punkbuster to be enabled.
Just a short term fix until PB issue a correct update.

    Any ideas?

Secondly if i do join a server not regulated by Punkbuster, what exactly am i letting myself in for? God only Knows!

Re: BF2 Instantly Disconnects when "JOIN" is clicked

I started having this issue last night, I checked my event viewer and it turns out that Windows Defender was continually detecting something odd and was disconnecting me from the server. I turned off the real time protection (I've got a much better anti virus real time running anyway...) and I was able to join and stay in game.

Obviously my case could be a lone case, but check your event viewer to see if any anti-virus or anti-spyware program is detecting objects and taking action.

Hmm...I will turn off my windows firewall and norton av autoprotect and see what happens.....oh well...no dice...same issue....

Interesting though...I have a bunch of these errors in my system event log...

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

I will try to delete my page file and recreate it to see what happens. Who knows at this point...the microsoft knowledge base says to replace the drive if the error is consistant. Still though, if it was a paging file issue...and it may be...why doesn't it affect other games such as CounterStrike:Source? I am thinking maybe my 1GB of system RAM is plenty for other games but for BF2 we know it is not and thus a paging file corruption would be more problematic? I am reaching here but...why not try?

Well...I tried increasing the page file but that didn't work. Next step is putting in my ghost drive as the main drive and running BF2 off of it to prove that it is not a hard drive issue.

Ok...found something that worked for me but it is still not 100% and I am fairly certain that punkbuster is still the culprit.

Anyhow, I tried running a full check disk with repair errors on my hard drive but that did not work...same issue. About 5 or 10 seconds after the JOIN SERVER button is available, I get a high pitched screeching sound and my hard drive would stop dead for 10 seconds disconnecting me from TeamSpeak and BF2. Again...this didn't start happening until last Sunday...the last PB update.

As a final straw, I put in my ghost drive from March 2006 that just sits in my desk drawer which is a newer, faster maxtor drive. I found that the disconnect issue no longer occurs with this hard drive. That being said, after PB downloads and about after 5 seconds after the JOIN SERVER button is available, I still get the screeching high pitched sound for a split second except with this newer hard drive, it does not hang it and continues on through the paging file.

I was reading a post from 2005 where somebody wrote the following about the sound issue with Audigy 2...same card that I have:
"this is what i just tried and it worked for me... YAY!
Note #2: I would like to work directly with you to narrow down the issue.
First: We have a new test PB Client ready which will hopefully help. Make a backup of your current pbcl.dll in the bf2/pb folder, and then replace the file with this one:

thats a quote from the guy at PB"

Seems like that fixed the issue for him and several others who posted in that thead. Still, that fix was from 2005 so I am a little hesitant to apply it now with my newer hard drive at least playing BF2.

I still have my support ticket open at PB but I need to update it with what I wrote above. I am still 99.99% certain this is PB conflicting with something on my system...it is just that it doesn't kill the paging now on my newer hard drive.

For those of you having the same problem, check your system event monitor and see if you see errors about the paging file when you lose connectivity. Maybe updating the sound.dll will help or maybe purchasing another hard drive and reinstalling Windows, etc. will help (although what a pain that is and PB should pay us to fix the issue they caused on our pc's....)
