BF2 Instantly Disconnects when "JOIN" is clicked

OK so today I did a couple registry tweaks for unloading DLLs, and pagefile usage etc. So I go to load BF2 and as soon as I clicked "Join Game" the whole computer locked up for about 10 seconds and the HDD activity was very intense like it was loading something - even though it just loaded....
anyways sometimes I can get into the server for about 2min and sometimes it's instant - "You have lost connection to the server". I updated PB manually. Any ideas? I guess I could revert my registry tweaks but they are legimiate and useful.... they shouldn't prevent BF2 from operating at all.

Something interesting - I tried to re-install 1.3 but the installer said bf2.exe was still running. Odd, I remember quitting BF2. But there it was, consuming 175MB of ram in the background.

What has work for me is counting to 10 before clicking on the join button. If I click on it right away it crashes to windows. Just count to 10.... :)

If you were tinkering around in the registry and unloading dll files, you could have done something without knowing. The problem you describe is a very common one. It's just the patch. Try the new beta and see what the changes do for your performance.

I have the same problem...just started last night. For the last 2 weeks, I have been ok with the 1.3 patch other than servers crashing during gameplay. Just last night however, I would login and it would load up the map fine but if I wait 10 seconds or so...as the hard drive is thrashing with virtual memory...the hard drive just stops dead. After another 10 seconds, it comes back and tells me the connection to the server has been lost...: During this timeframe the "join" button is available to click but I do not click it. This happens on any map for SF or BF2. Not only that, but if I am on TS, it disconnects TS as well.

I have tested other games and they are fine going out to the net, joining and playing...definitely BF2 only....so it is not a general hardware issue. I just tried reinstalling the v1.3 Full patch. It went through shader optimization....yada yada...but same issue.

Any ideas?

Thank god it's not only me then. I have had the same experience as all above but it has only started happening in the last few days. It was working fine before that.

Sometimes it crashes to desktop, more often i lose my connection and am presented with the infamous "there is a problem with your connection" (Duh thats because you just closed it)

My other online games work fine, Hope 1.4 fixes this i'm having withdrawal symptoms already.

Gentlemen...I think this is a PunkBuster issue. My bet is if you try to load a single player game or connect to an unranked server, you wont have any issues...unfortunately, not much we can do other than post the issue at www.punkbuster.com...which I implore you to do so this gets fixed faster.

Everytime I try to connect to a server, after about 10 seconds after the "join" button is available, I receive a "lost connection to server" message. BF2 is unplayable.

I have been running v1.3 of BF2 for weeks without a problem. This problem just started happening Sunday night - 7/9...the same time Version 1.241 of PunkBuster was released.

Today I have tried reinstalling BF2 and reimaging my hard drive via Ghost with an image from 3/2006. In both cases, after I updated BF2 to v1.3, I was able to log into the first server that I tried without an issue. I played on the initial map for about 10 minutes. However, once that server changed maps or I try to log into another server, I have the same problem of "lost connection to server". After this occurs, every time I try to connect to any server, the same thing occurs. If I try to connect to single player I don't have any issue which is further proof it is punkbuster as I am not having any issues with my other online games.

In addition, many months ago I had a similar problem with similar BF2 behavior that turned out to be PunkBuster related.

If necessary, please UNDO the latest version of PunkBuster immediately. I appreciate the role of PunkBuster but when it makes the game unplayable throughout it's lifespan at various times due to bugs, it is very frustrating. Please keep me advised of your findings.

i used to press esc to join game. somehow, using esc was better than clicking join game.

There is the manual application updater. This may help you patch the PB faster.

Your welcome....if everyone who has this issue posts, it should force punkbuster to move a bit faster. I have asked them a few times just to recall their last PB update but they don't respond to that.

As for the manual PB update, I tried that but it didn't help. Most of the friends who I play with are not having any issues and one of them has a system almost identical to mine. Strange....very strange.

One thing that is consistent...at the exact instant when the problem occurs...my hard drive just stops for about 5 seconds, everything freezes, and then I get the "lost connection to server error". Because the hard drive just stops dead, I also get disconnected from TeamSpeak if I am on it.

Remember...this is not happening to any other online game. Also, if I restore my ghost image from March or reinstall the game, I can connect and play for about 5 or 10 minutes...until I assume the new version of PB is downloaded and then WHAM....Hard drive just stops....I get disconnected...and then I cannot even join another ranked server for more than 10 seconds before I get disconnected again. Of course unranked servers and single player give me no problems whatsoever.

I have tried but repatching with the full 1.3 and incrementals. Not sure what else to do. I sent a log file to punkbuster. I just wish they would recall their last update and see if that fixes things.

Lets keep this thread going with current updates. BF2 is unplayable for me until this gets resolved.

This happened to me as well, and as soon as I turned off Zone Alarm everything worked fine. I'm not sure about other firewalls or if it's just punkbuster doing something wierd, but for me Zone Alarm and Battlefield 2 do not like each other.
