The full version of zone36's video is here

It's actually the X35B in testing. VTOL to hover, but no VTOL and rotation to level flight, because it's dangerous, uses too much fuel and too slow. They need to get off the deck fast.

So I'm sittin at home waiting for the dern server guys to finish their work so I can wrap up my network duties and I'm watchin the history channel.

They're doin a piece of how crappy the harrier is and they briefly talk about the F-35 JSF. They said "Although it does not have the capability of vertical take-off, it does have an impressive short take-off capability".

Pretty interesting eh? The F-35 can't take off verically IRL.
Uhhhhhhhh ok, You definately misinterpreted what they said. Because A: I've seen a short online video of the JSF doing a VTOL and B: http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/st...001/0001520175

you didn't read the thread - that is NOT the f-35, that is the x-35

            court re-convened?

Just like I said, you confused me, cause people call the X-35 the F-35...

And the F-35B does have VTOL doesn't it

according the the JSF website, the F35b is only vertical landing

I don't argue that some of the experimental varients COULD take off vertically, I'm just saying that it looks like DICE stuck the X-35 in instead of the F-35.

x is the name given to any plane still in testing (a possible no build) when it reaches a state where its production is virtually assured it is given a name such as f-35.

Which is why most people refer to the "X-35" as the F-35

I just call it the JSF (short for JSF F-35)

                      Re: F-35 - Not VTO?

so we are clear that the X-35 (might have) had VTOL capabilities but was scrapped for the production model right?

I'm looking around for proof that a production model had VTOL - and haven't come up with any real proof.

wow really? The X-35 can VTOL? That's interesting - I don't think that's ever been discussed in this thread before.

                          OH WAIT! it has. sheesh.

LOL how much BS in this thread. Signature X means experimental. Experimental aircrafts get a normal signature F when they're approved and go into production. So yes, X-35 is F-35. Both have VTOL capabilities (B version of course) because they're the "same" plane. Joint Strike Fighter is just the name of the military program(comptetition).

                            So it goes like this:
                            F-35A - CTOL (USAF)
                            F-35B - STOVL (Marnies/British Army)
                            F-35C - CV/CTOL (US Navy)

                            Kapish?

interesting how you say f-35b is vtol but then you list it as stovl
