How do you make the jump from 'adequate' pilot to 'terror of the skies'

Ok I have been trying to learn to fly a plane recently with mixed results.

I learned the basics offline on a local server and on Op Clean Sweep single player. I got to the stage of getting 50 + kills and a handful of deaths (pesky trees) with a mixture of bombing, strafing and AA so I thought ok time for a go at the real thing.

I have tried to find quiet servers whereby I will not be affecting the outcome for my team by taking up a jet for a while (basically terying to not do anything that I have read that people advise against when learning to fly). However I am just getting mauled

Is it just a case of practice practice practice? Should I be spending more time offline? How did the decent pilots become decent pilots? Do some have experience form other/older games? This is the first online game I have played and also ther first time I have had a go a flying anything but it's kinda demoralising getting my ass kicked so badly in the air. (Just for example I went 14 kills - 1 death playing infantry then went 2 kills - 15 deaths in a plane  )

I got 4 years of dogfighting experience in BF, so I'm king of the skies.

      Here's my story.

I, as anyone else, started from 0. With a mouse. I used to be a huge target in the skies... but I kept flying... against some really good pilots (back then) and learned it the hard way. I reached a point where I don't fear to go up in the skies because I know I have the experaince and knowlege of how to fly in BF2.

Basically, my story isn't much help  ... bascially, just pracitse, THINK, LOOK WHAT WORKS BEST... don't just get in a jet and fly and expect to get good... use your brain, and fly a lot, fly against pro pilots, you'll learn more the hard way (even thought that means more deaths)... but you will learn. Just keep flying, thinking, looking.

I remember I had one guy as my worst enemy because of the jets, he used to kill me ALL the time. Now I'm better than him.

I started out on maps where I had the biggest plane advantage. Although I still didnt own, I got better and better...Here's the steps i took.

              1. J10 on Wake...this is good for beginners, just dont rape the carrier
              2. Mig-29 on Zatar or Oman, is good against f35 unless they're really good pilots
              3. J-10 on Daquing, J10 is amazing, but so is that damn f-18
              4. F-18 on Op. Clean sweep, very good plane vs. another almost as good plane
              5. Su-34 on Oman, practice getting away from the F35
              6. F-15 on Kubra, can escape the Mig-29 if you're good

This is just what I tried, and no matter what, a good pilot will still be able to take you out - no matter what plane you're in

Nah I say get the crappiest plane and learn the tough/hard way.

                The best way to learn.

It's like a life rule... people who've had it tough... will get throught the hard times and end up better off

                LEARN ON F35B!

Nah, ya gotta at least start on something that even newbs can get kills, if not they'll get discouraged. Dont start with the F35 - its not a good idea imo.

If you dont want to use the format I used, at least start with the mig-29.

But that's how I started, and that's how I learned all by MYSELF. All I do now came from experiance.

If you get in a J10, ok, you will learn the basics blah blah... get good at it, then get in a F35B and 'almost' all the stuff you've learned will have wanished and you'll have to cotinue learning on the F35B for a bit. J10 is easier.

Now, if you learn on the F35B first, get all the skills and get good, and THEN get on a J10... you'll be flying with one hand and eating popcrons while pwoning everyone! (npt sure how to spell pwoen haha lol... )

OK not saying I'm an ace or anything but I'll give you three rules.

                      1) Learn to fly when looking rear view. The controls invert practice until this becomes second nature. Try some crazy stuff, but if you don't know how to do it you just as well not bother.

                      2) Look behind every ten seconds, if you think no one is there and you have not seen an enemy plane in the sky for ages, still look behind. Like a religon, ALWAYS.

                      3) React, so despite the first two someone has tone on you and you still don't know what it is. GUESS but DO SOMETHING, don't scratch your head and think what's that funny sound if you don't know, GUESS. Ground hit the deck, plane pull up.

Everyone is sharing tips, which is not something you need actually. What you need is practice, patience and persistance (LOL). Seriously, know that you suck, yet suck the loss up and go on. We were all newbies and pro-food sometimes. Somewhere along the way will come certain checkpoints where you need to study certain stuff. For example, rear view, flare drop timing, plane characteristics and whatnot. This will come in time, just dont give up.

Im not a fear of the skies, but I rank myself pretty high in dogfighting abilities. I started up as a total beginner, with KB + KB. Secret is to not to give up.

Buy a joystick if you havent already. I'm no expert at flying, but i went from 6/35 K/D ratio with keyboard and mouse to a 210/70 K/D ratio with a Joystick.

                            Worked for me :P
