      Yes, joystick helps a lot.

Find a pilot who you consider pro, and fly against him. Every time he shoots you down, figure out why and try to counter him. You can practice bombing on SP, but dogfighting is a whole new ballgame. Once your survival time increases from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes you know you're improving. Try to get on his tail.

      Best training maps are:

Gulf of Oman: MiG29 vs F35B matchup is not too imba.
      OCS: Bomber vs Bomber.
Kubra Dam: The F18 is superior to the MiG29 yes, but not as bad as J10.

Basically avoid all maps with J10. You can own rather easy with it, but it also means you don't learn how to counter against opponents who can turn faster than you cause of the plane.

Fly on french servers. The pilots there are very average-skilled.

I'm not lying. The good pilots there are usually non-french.

Love to help, but I stay outta the air for a good reason: I can't fly either. Gimme my tank, or better yet just my gun, and I'm good to go.

I learned the basics offline on a local server and on Op Clean Sweep single player. I got to the stage of getting 50 + kills and a handful of deaths (pesky trees) with a mixture of bombing, strafing and AA so I thought ok time for a go at the real thing.

I have tried to find quiet servers whereby I will not be affecting the outcome for my team by taking up a jet for a while (basically terying to not do anything that I have read that people advise against when learning to fly). However I am just getting mauled

Is it just a case of practice practice practice? Should I be spending more time offline? How did the decent pilots become decent pilots? Do some have experience form other/older games? This is the first online game I have played and also ther first time I have had a go a flying anything but it's kinda demoralising getting my ass kicked so badly in the air. (Just for example I went 14 kills - 1 death playing infantry then went 2 kills - 15 deaths in a plane  )
                    1. Buy a joystick
                    2. If you can stay in the air (without enemies) dont bother with singleplayer. Play online. A lot. It will come with experience. (BF2 was my first game where learned how to fly a jet or chopper and in the beginning I was realy bad... now after 60/80 hours of riding I can say I'm pretty good.
                    3. To become even better read the forums and watch some Planewhore video

The best part of BF2 was (for me) the learing how to fly. I took me some days to get from A. location to B without crashing and killing some ppl at the same time. After a 1,5months of playing I got the heli/plane ribbons. I felt leet now I can fulfill those requiremants any time I want...

All you need is anger and hatred of your enemy. Then you can kill them over and over again and you will be their terror. I've seen guys jump off the carrier into the water at the sound of my jet engine  .

learning to fly the heli was so hard. i remember i would just do a backwards flip every single time when trying to take off.

Buy a joystick, learn basics on public servers, after some time look for some good clan servers and learn the hard way.

                            Some good tips here guys.
I'm trying to master the whole airbourne thing too.
Getting better at helos (after a bit of practice), but jets are still a whole different ball game.
I too usually ground pound/armour whore, but wish i could fly better, coz i keep getting owned by helos/jets.

So will take on board all tips here........keep watching the skies, coz i cud be owning you soon lol

I just bought a good joystick and am hooking it up now, and consider myself a little above average pilot, using the keyboard. I first learned to pilot on the J10. It gives you the basics and allows you to get confident through winning. Once you've mastered controls, flares, and how to get and stay on another jet's tail, move on to something harder. That would probably be the F35, if you've practiced long enough you should be ready. Adapt those techniques of maneuvering and following jets to the worst jet in the game. Once you feel relatively comfortable in the F35, then you have pretty much learned all there is to learn about the jets, and you just need to fine tune it a little.
