Re: What do you expect from a commander?

To me the commander needs to take on the role of information officer. Too many commanders are just clicking away without regard to strategy or communication.

My two cents: It is NOT true that the commander's assets must be used over and over.

Thinking that they do is what leads to commanders dropping cars where they think they are needed rather than where he/she is told they are needed. How many times has a commander given away your position b/c he/she dropped a car near you when you didn't ask for it?

What I expect From a Commander:

A good Hiding spot, so that the enemy commander keeps trying to kill him with a vehicle drop.

      What I dont expect,

I wish the commander would just shut up

I want a command who commands, stayes out of vehicles, grants supply, arty, vehc. drops, etc if available, and doesn't constantly spot things.

I had a commander the other day who spotted the same sniper who was way far away from the main battle 15 times in a row. It gets annoying

Re: What do you expect from a commander?

After reading all these posts I've realised I have been a good thoughtful commander in my time, thanks for this post. Patch up on anything I was missing, because not enough squadleader's talk back and I get the impression I talk to much haha.
E.g. If I have a UAV flown over an area from suburb down to Train accident on Karkand as this is where most of the MEC are, I would do a scan and pick up if anyone was attempting our other bases. If there was more than 2 or 3 I would rather say it over the Viop than say spotted 5times (unless needed). Also, If a squad is attempting a bases elsewhere, like cement factory, I will personally look and tell them over voip they're safe or not, or what's coming. Too many guys in a newly captured flag, 1st spot any left over enemies, 2nd press 'K' and tell them to spread out before they're arty'd by the other commander (See this all too often..)
Another thing you can do to help a Commander is when running to take your Factory back, repair the UAV briefly and get a UAV over it as soon as possible.
As commander, announce the tanks or APCs are free in your base if no one has it.
Provide UAVs in large scale areas E.g. Karkand, placed in the middle of Suburb and Square to have a better view of incoming troops and vechiles, Or the hill leading up to Suburb and the left passage staircases. Spot any outskirt enemies also.
Drop supplies on your tank whores :) Helps suppressing badies longer
Warning of incoming Armour or APC threats
Arty where appropriate, and I usually announce it pressing 'K' in big gold platted writing "ARTY! ARTY! ARTY!" ...or something, just incase the don't understand arabic Artillery in your muthafukn area :)

EDIT: Also use Viop to squadleaders who request things. Like yeap sure thing, or hold on a sec still waiting (how long they'll have to wait), or sorry it's dead (someone please repair)

Re: What do you expect from a commander?

As u can see from some of the replies here, there are many competent Commanders out there. But, there are not so many queries to the incompetence of some players. A lot of which do not even attempt to play as a team. Nor even join a squad!

I don't care about people initiating a kick vote against me at all. Why? Because I know u can't do a better job at Commanding.

It seems this post should be re-titled to invite Squadleaders & Squadmembers to learn what it is they should really be doing. Not what 'U' require from the Commander. But what 'The Commander' requires from u. That's much more to the point.

                NEVER EVER FLY a jet
NEVER EVER FLY a helo - except in extreme emergency to CAP a flag
                (to save a game)
NEVER EVER gun in a helo - except in extreme emergency
NEVER EVER DRIVE armor - parking in Armor OK to prevent theft - but GET out when asked

In addition to non-stop UAV.SCANS.SUPPLES SMART ARTY and cartillery
                use the VOIP ,

                and the better commanders can:
zoom in and spot 'tactical enemies' - eg flag to be taken, spec ops by armor, etc not just spam and spot every single guy
but ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS spot armor/help/jet

and the better commanders can anticipate certain troop movements and set up traps (FUN)
Couldn't have said it better. But I'd add...

NEVER ignore the requests of the most experienced players you're commanding.

NEVER ignore communications or requests from squad leaders, if you can't fulfill a reasonable request give a reason and agree on some alternative.

I also think it's ok for the commander to nip out in ANY vehicle to cap a nearby flag, given that with the benefit of scans etc. he should easily take the threat out, then make the vehicle available to the team again (A good example of this is MEC commander preventing loss of the Farm flag on Zatar Wetlands).

Re: What do you expect from a commander?

Reading this topic has definently made me realize that have been doing a damn fine job at commanding so far. You literally have to spend 100% of your time in the commander screen. The only problem I have with commanding is that I canno get VoIP to work with it to talk to my teammates. It works fine for everything else, but the second I become commander, I have to start typing everything out. Damn annoying.

Good post. Maybe this will open some eyes.

That is my #1 Most annoying thing about stupid commanders who can't do their job today I came across some guy called.. What was it.. His clantag was FOG and his name begin with a F.. Ah w/e his rank was Lieutenant Colonel.. For a guy like that I expected some more teamplay or something maybe he was ****ed or something?
It's not the commanders fault the game does this. When spotting the commander should have a choice of a red spoken command (like the present system), but also a yellow spotting menu item that just causes a flash on the minimap and displays the unit on the map for all the team.

Then when the commander thinks the unit is critically threatening he could choose to use the spoken alert, and then ppl would pop their heads up like WTF!! Where!!

Just another oversight in any beta testing this game might have had.

so I was a SL on Mashtuur City defending the mosque and attacking flags, etc. The Co had been Co for the past 3 or 4 maps and he sucked. Basically, he was playing like everyone else, using the Co assets for HIS own gain, no one else's. He would ignore all SL requests and just ignore everyone and play only for points. Its no surprise we lost everytime, and then the next round same Co would just continue tank whoring or doing whatever, giving himself vehicle drops and supply drops and no one else.

People listen up: The CO position does not give you the right for a bunch of new toys, it gives you ENTIRE team those toys, if you cant do you your job on the BF, than sit back in a corner and command you team, if you think thats boring than GET THE F*CK OUT OF THE CO POSITION.

Well,i have noticed that when things arent going in your teams favor. Then those that suck really bad start a mutiny because they think that they can substitue kicking a commander for their inability to win.

                              Figure this one out...

I was on a 20 person 64map of krakand last night and after taking the role of US cmdr I find my entire team playing hide the sausage just down the hill from the right hand spawn. I start driving towards the main action (not into the action just up from the armour spawn and I get mutiny #1... I shrug it off to the guy being a nob...

after a few moments of watching our team do f'all except spawn, charge, die I decide to go get another spawn hopefully encouraging others to follow suit. I get mutiny #2 by a guy who's just entered the server.

Now remember its 10vs10 on a 64person map so there's LOTS of room to move about and in these situations the commander shouldn't in my opinion just sit on his arse screaming "enemy infantry spotted". So I get a CP, throw up a uav over the idiots still charging down the hill and decide to chance another spawn since no one was around.

Some others get the idea that charging down hill is ghey and decide to also catch spawns....

                              And then mutiny's #3-5

I go "why the vote? we're winning aren't we?" to which the retards just don't reply...

The games going in our favour. We had more tickets, had taken most of the spawns including the mec main and we're in a good position to finish them off in a few more minutes... and then another vote

"%&$%Y($* why the vote now? we've practically won!"

                              no reply

next thing 5 out of 5 votes required for mutiny - you've been demoted
Great - with only two mec spawns remaining.

..and guess what 4 minutes went past before anyone took the commander roll

friggen muppets (yes we won, yes I tk'ed the new commander and ran into his artillery in spite and yes I got a silver for my efforts - least it wasn't a complete waste of time).
