Well I'm note sure about the menu lag but there are ways to make load time quicker. First of all, use a gametracker not the built in gamespy. A month ago I would have suggested using 'The All seing Eye' but its appears that is now dead
. Try QTracker, then you wont have to wait for all the movies and log in screens and all that c**p, it just loads straight to server.
It always takes a while to load the actual maps in BF2 because alot of them are huge. Verifying Client Data also takes a long time, I believe this is when the server uses an MD5 hash to verify you havent changed any of the core parts of BF2. This take's ages for most people. It will go quicker if you have fast hardrives (10000rpm) or you are trying to join linux based servers.
