- AIM-9 Sidewinder missile (Heat Seeking)

Fox 2
- AIM-7 Sparrow missile (Radar)

Fox 3
- AIM-54 Phoenix missile

Fox 4
- AIM-120 AMRAAM.

"Fox One" is forward hemisphere (meaning radar guided), "Fox Two" is rear hemisphere (heat seeking), and "Fox Three" is air to air guns.

AIM-7, 54, and 120 are all forward hemisphere because they are radar guided, so they would fall under "Fox One".

Fox One (Two, Three, Four) - Used to report the launch of a air-to-air missile, from the 'Foxtrot' (F) of the phonetic alphabet. 'Fox One' is a semi-active radar-homing missile, e.g. Sparrow (AIM-7). 'Fox Two' is a heat-seeking missile, e.g. Sidewinder (AIM-9). 'Fox Three' is an active radar-homing missile--either Phoenix (AIM-54) or the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile (the Air Force sometimes uses Fox Three to report firing of guns.) 'Fox Four' is sometimes used derisively to refer to a midair collision.

I have a correction to make. Fox 2 is indeed IR missiles. In particular, when refering to all aspect missiles, they reference the missiles designation letter.

'Fox 2 mike' refers to the Sidewinder M varient that has the all aspect head.

The 'P' version, has the rear aspect seeker head.


'Fox 1' is for the missile known as the Sparrow. It is a woeful missile that you must maintain a lock of the target from launching aircraft.

'Fox 3' the AMRAAM fire and forget radar weapon.

Many years ago, there was a game called US Navy Fighters. When flying the F-14, and launching the Phoenix, the pilot would say "Fox Three"

The reason the Pheonix was so good was it's 150 nm range.

It was actually a semi-active seeker head, so therefore should have been Fox 1.
