New graphics bug? haven't seen this one...blue streaks/lines

    MotherBoard Type: ECS 848P-A
    32bit or 64 Bit: 32
    Operating System: XP Home SP2
    32bit or 64 Bit: 32
    Video Card: 9800Pro
    Driver Version: Catalyst 6.5
    Sound Card: onboard
    Driver Version: n/a
    RAM: 512mb PC3200
    Model and Speed: Gigaram PC3200
    DVD Model: none
    CD Model: OEM lite-on
    Install Path: default

A little background: I first installed BF2 on a machine similar to this back when it was released and played it relatively bug-free for 6 or 8 months. then upgraded almost my entire PC (AMD Athlon X2 4200+, 2GB ram, Nvidia 7800GTX, ASUS A8N-SLI deluxe MB, etc). so the parts i originally had leftover, i used to make the HTPC that i am currently experiencing this bug with, which is the specs listed above. my first few installs the game wouldn't even load. i fixed that with another install. updated to the latest patch, and am still having the problem. screenshot is included below:

basically, everything in the lower 2/3 of the frame is screwed up. there are vertical blue lines covering most of the screen, and all that weird looking stuff in the lower corners of the screen is all "attached" to the players movement, meaning when i look around, it moves with me, like it's part of the gun. additionally, when changing altitude in the game (walking up or down a hill, etc) it appears as though you are walking through the floor or ceiling.

i'm only having this problem on this machine, and it happens regardless of whether the PC is running on the LCD monitor, or on my HDTV. and i have launched the game with my desktop resolution set at all of the following res's, without the problem going away:

    856x480p
    720x480p
    1770x1000i
    1920x1080i
    1280x1024i

has anyone else experienced this problem, or have any idea what may be causing it?

EDIT: I just installed the 1.3 patch, restarted the machine, and then launched the game...and what do i see? a message from EA telling me the download the 1.3 patch, which i have already installed. WTF? where do i check which version i actually have installed?

Looks like your video card is dying it might just be artifacts on the screen
Time for a new video card

Edit: the patch message is one from ea that the whole bf2 community will see telling them that patch 1.3 is out and to download it (if they havent already)

yep, i think you're right. i reinstalled ATITool and ran the simulation...the 3-dimensional fuzzy box that it renders as a test was actually hollow...i could see the inside of the box, and there were yellow and red lines running vertically down the window that it is rendered in.

i never considered that possibility because the card was taken such good care of (was watercooled for most of it's life) and also, it ran everything else prefectly fine: media players, powerstrip custom resolutions of all sizes, all of my emulators, etc. but i guess none of the above are half as graphically taxing as BF2.

nevertheless, i'm going to try a new card. the mobo in my HTPC is AGP only, so i'm going with the X850XT. i can't make myself spend a $400-$600 on another card when i just bought a 7800GTX for my desktop PC a few months ago. being only for my HTPC the $230 X850XT will have to do. it should be futureproof for at least another 2 years of gaming though.

      thx for the reply.
