If your BF2 is unexpectedly crashing to desktop please read this post.

Ok, I have seen a bunch of threads where people are posting that their "BF2 wont start" or "is crashing after I start it" or "are crashing after I click the Join game button".

I am making this thread to post/find a fix to these problems.

(If anyone has found anything else that works, please reply and I will edit this post)

Current Fix(es)

Fix #1: Try patching the Full 1.3 Patch. Try this even if you have already done the incremental.

Fix #2: Uninstall BF2 and all its components. Reinstall BF2, and use the Full 1.3 Patch to reach the newest version.

Note: Make sure you have downloaded the 1.3 Patch from reliable sources!

Fix #3: Read through This Thread...but make your you read through the whole thing.

Fix #4: Read through This Post Made by |2usty|2ifle. It contains another fix that may solve your CTD problem.

These are the current fixes at this time. Again, if anyone has found anything else that works (especially a fix that does not require uninstalling), please post it.

I had the problem where BF2 crashes after the BF2 logo disappears and drops me back to the desktop. My solution to the problem was the fact that I had entertainment mode set instead of gaming mode on my X-Fi xtrememusic. Hope this helps someone

Remember when BF2 first launches it starts off at 800x600x60hz

So if you have "refresh force", turn it off.

my first thought was to reinstall then apply the full patch, so I did. no luck, still crashes while starting up. And I know it's not a setting I changed, because I was playing right before I installed the patch. ****ing blows.

The incremental patch crashed my otherwise stable system. I installed the full patch over the rest and all is well again.

Alrighty, it looks like Fix #2 is working for most people.

Let me know of any other fixes.

same problem here. game worked fine b4 1.3 but now i can only join a server 1/4 times. every other time=CTD

Tried fixes #1 & #2: it didn't work.

Problems are the same.

1. SERIOUS amount of lag after about 10 min of play. It slows down to the point of being unplayable (that's why I'm here...I'd rather be online playing). Same symptoms on different servers (any server), so the problem cannot be attributed to a single server. Not a problem until 1.3.

2. "noise" on the screen. Major amounts of distortion. Looks like an old 1920s movie. All video settings are on medium. Not a problem until 1.3.

3. CTDs. Happens way more often. Not a problem until 1.3.

Well guys, I do not know how to solve those problems. The 1.3 Patch is very messed up and has screwed up so many things.

The only thing I can suggest is to make sure you got 1.3 from a reliable source.

My problem is whenever I try to run BF2, screen goes black like it wants to start, then crashes back to desktop.

I have tried Solutions 1 & 2 at least 4 times along with updating my forceware. I am at the point of breaking my damn BF2 and SF discs and saying "To hell with it."
