So if the squad leader is supposed to hang back and play it safe while his squad members do the dirty work then how the heck does he get points?

the reward is a win. besaides that though, theres different types of squad leaders, the onfoot SL is the one you are talking about. but theres also the sniper squad leader, the apc squad leader, and the car squad leader.

the car/apc SL in particular is the first one in and first one out
