Fabulous letter, Craig, and great responses by the rest. I would like to compound this issue by dusting off everyone's doubts to really bring the issues to light.
1. BF2142, after much analysis, is not that much different from BF2. All they did was change the "story", new skins, reorganized the kits, different vehicles, and there is now a Titan mode. 2142 still appears to use the same proprietary engine, which means more bugs. I hate to break it to you guys, but BF2 was supposed to come with multiple game modes, yet it did not release as such. What guarantees do you have that BF2142 will be different?
2. Second, BF2142 only looks good because of the scripted in-game video that was obviously done on a stable supercomputer for a scene. The intro trailer for BF2 looks like the action is stable and fluid, but real world server action is anything but. Look past the hype that EA is known for and look back on history--hindsight is always 20/20. The BF series, when in the hands of EA, has been disastrous. Only with intervention by modders has BF been saved.
Vote with your feet on this matter. Just don't buy 2142 when it comes out. Whether EA makes a truly complete BF series game or not will be irrelevant. Here are two explanatory scenarios (assuming a stable demo is released to lure us suckers in):
1. EA fails to make a complete game. None of us are surprised. Only those who actually purchased the game to realize this will experience buyer's remorse. Sales will slump. EA's FPS division will either be cleaned out and restaffed or be disbanded.
2. EA makes a complete game, but only a few of us try it out due a consitent history of poor development and support. Even if the game is good, EA's reputation will have been its Achilles heel as those of us who were let down purchase the competitor's products.
The only other game I remember having as many issues was Frontier:First Encounters. The 'third' Elite game by Gametek some years ago. It had major problems, and every patch solved some, but created others.
As for the patch...some of the features are nice....but the bugs introduced are too serious to overlook. How the hell do you overlook so many bugs in the browser...the thing is all over the place. This must be addressed soon!
As for BF2142, I see this as a huge mistake for EA. By releasing this game they are going to get a large portion of the BF2 community into the sci-fi realm again....JUST IN TIME FOR UT2007 RELEASE! And anyone who has played games released by EPIC, thei support is top notch. Pacthes as needed, free map packs, free booster packs, etc. Just from this, there is a good possibility BF2142 will have a sizable fan base for a few months at best!
What EA/Dice has done to the Battlefield series reminds me of what Vivendi Universal did to the Tribes series. Why can't they figure out that people would rather wait a few months, then get a game with so many bugs that its almost unplayable. Hopefully someone will realize this and the Battlefield series won't become like Tribes and lose it's fanbase because EA/Dice considers making new games more important than fixing their current ones. No one bought Tribes: Vengance because Tribes 2 was such a letdown, and chances are many people who bought BF2 wont purchase 2142 because of EA's history of releasing games before they are ready and offering such terrible support for their games.
I want BF2142 to flop. I don't mean to wish bad things upon the developer's hard work (despite how buggy their stuff is, it's still pretty tough work), but I want EA and DICE to realise that they can't treat their community like crap and get away with it. If BF2142 flops, EA and DICE's wallet (they are to money as Volx, Blazin, and firestorm are to points) will be majorly hurt and hopefully will be the wake-up call for them to start taking leads from other companies like Valve, who provide excellent free content and support.

BF2 has become a game where you don't fight your opponents as much as you fight the bugs. -Maestro Satanus
That's probaly the most accurate summary of BF2 right now that I've heard. Unfortunately to fix this EA will just release another crappy patch that causes even more bugs, and then another one to fix that patch. It's an unending cycle of patches that do more harm than good.
The game is stabel, I have never seen the red tag bug since I look at the uniform first and than shoot... what are you talking about, quit whining already........

yea right PTG city maps only server crashed 6 times already
and I gt 1 CTD again and some other dam bugs.....
I liked the letter very much, but as for a mass exitus of players, it doesn't seem to be happening. Still has about 29K players at any given time, which was about the same before last patch.
To the guy that said "look at the uniform" for the red nametag bug, I've had it multiple times happen where the guy has the other team's uniform, appears red, but is friendly.
I have already decided, and did long ago, that BECAUSE of the poor support given for BF2, over the last year of game play, I will be voting with my wallet, and NOT buying Armored forces, because no server's will play them, and I will NOT be buying BF2142.
Thats ok, keep sh!++ing on my game and make sure I contiune to tell that hundreds of customer that I encounter every day at Fry's Electronic, *where I work* that EA makes p!ss poor games and dosent not deserve any money.
