I much prefer shooting down my targets either with the cannon only or a mixture of cannon and missiles. Spamming the missile fire button in hopes of getting a kill is just "noobish" in my book.

Assuming you flew pre-patch 1.2, you'll likely remember about the only effective way to down another jet was to pursue him with the bomb HUD, get right behind him, switch to missile HUD, gain lock and fire away. Flares were useless in such a situation. This required the attacker to actually be skilled enough to stay on their target's tail. Post 1.2, the only skill required was to get close enough behind to gain a missile lock.

After I learned what was effective and what was not pre-1.2, I rarely had trouble killing airborne targets.
I only started playing BF2 from Jan this year (1.1) and was only just getting to be quite good in the Jets then 1.2 came out and all of a sudden I was not quite so good. With 1.2 I am still pretty decent in jets and yes, I am well familiar with using the bomb hud tactic and tailing jet till it is a sitting duck......the way I do it though is leave missile hud on to see if he has any flares to drop first.......

There is no doubt about it m8, being effective in jets has become a whole lot harder cos initially I understand they just made the game a misery for all those on the ground. Perhaps they have made them easier for noobs to control and fly about but they certainly are not near as devastating as they once were......like I say, they can now be plucked from sky like over rip cherries..........Boring, frustrating nightmare to play in them now....u are in the air...u are getting tailed....you have 3-4 AA guns locked on you...u use your flares...u lose the jet tailing you, fly out of range of the 3-4 aa guns with 1/3 health left and right into the range of another set of AA guns...BOOM,....down u go!

Nothing that anyone can do.......I am seeing players that I have long recognised as total Jet Whores with stupendously high ranks not being able to stay in the air for any longer than 2 minutes........b4, if you got some guy with a very high rank up in the jet...then you would be lucky if he was brought down 1-2 times.......hell, I would consider myself to have a bad round if I ws brought down in jet any more than 3-4 times and with anything less than 20 kills......(apart from in F35 V J10 rounds.....F35 has no chance against any J10 being controlled by even a semi-competent player)

Erm... you have a sense of humour, right...?
No , they nerfed it with 1.2.

Anyhow, although in game my attitude is exactly "STFU, deal with it, its fine", Ive complained in forums far more often to be taken that way. Still, I think 99% of BF2 changes and bugs can be overcome, with lesser and greater effort.

When there is a change in a game, the community divides into 3:

Opponents/Whiners- This group is the most verbose out of the community due to the fact that they are suffering from the change; whether it's their fault or not, it doesn't matter. Usually this camp employ emotions, BS statistics, hypothetical scenarios, and cliche rhetorical devices over reasons, sources, and fact to argue their position. Some of the most impressive arguments from this camp are long and well-written, motivated by anger and discontent yet controlled by discipline, self-awareness, and responsibilty. Unfortunately, such gems are covered underneath by massive disgraceful and poorly written posts as if created with cookie-cutters.

Proponents/Praisers- This group is usually mute as they are either satisfied or esctatic of the change, some too busy enjoying the game. These are the clear winners- They are enjoying the game and do not care of the negative sentiments of the whine/rant camp. It's not uncommon to see some expressing approval or revering the change, but quite rare to see the members in this group countering the views of the whine/rant camps. Almost no impressive nor disgraceful posts are created by this group: just maybe a one line sentence or a paragraph if the reader is lucky. However, some of users in this camp can change into the last camp known as:

Anti-Whine/"Adapt it"- This group is the result of the establishment of the rant/whine camp: They are either discontent or satisfied of the change but clearly annoyed by the criticisms and verbal outrage among their rival camp. Most will reply within the threads, topics, and posts first created by ranters and whiners, very few will create their own topics to address their views with many being called hypocrites and contradicting themselves. Usually the members of this group will employ reasons and sources or at least common sense to counter and silence the commonly emotional whiners. However, the main flaw from this group is that they have the tendency to repetitively call out the same reasons or arguments to either express or defend their position; alienating many users to ignore them. Yet some will stoop to the foe's level; two example's being name calling and personal attacks.
