    Re: flares?

I called Cleo today, in her psychic vision of the BF2 future, she told me the next crying jag will be...

'Why do the heli pilots and jet pilots get to use a nose cam when the other vehicles do not. I mean, the tanks and apcs have to deal with a restricted view, so why not the aircraft. It's so unfair and unrealistic, this should be just like the real thing, were's my tissues...'

Sooner or later, that will come up. And 'No', that is not how I want it, but you know there is some jack*ss just waiting to cry about it.

Actually u do get a warning that someone has a lock on you. You have that even on the modern tanks and apc's, just like in the game. This game is closest to the reality than any game made so far. But once again, obviously he doesn't know what he is talking about, you get only 2-3 sets of flares, and there is a reloading time also. He should do some research before posting and complaining. This is a modern warfare simulation, not some stupid arcade game with unlimited weapons.

        Re: flares?

No, modern IR missiles do NOT give a warning to the target.

The reason modern tanks have warning sensors is because weapon systems used to defeat them typically use lasers for targetting. An emitted laser can be detected with sensors on the hull of the tank, sending a warning the the crew.

An IR seeking missile is passive. It does not send a signal to the tank/jet. You just get hit and die.

            Re: flares?

Active targetting systems (lasers, radar etc) can be detected, meaning warnings can be given to the target. Passive systems (such as IR) however cannot be detected and so no warning can be given.

Active systems send out energy (such as radar waves) that can be picked up on sensors; passive systems work only by detecting energy emitted by the target (such as the heat from a jet's engines) meaning it's physically impossible to detect when you're being "painted" by a passive system.

                Re: flares?

Okay IRL helicopters only have a limited number of flares. These flares are used to get rid of stinger locks.
Helicopters dont have to bother about aircraft because of the following:

                1) Helicopters ( cobra & apache like types ) are only deployed when there are no aircraft arround in the area. Such as a no fly zone for example. The authorities dont put in a multi milljon dollar helicopter when it can be put down fairly easy by enemy jets.

                2) Even when enemy jets are in the area, the helicopter fly's low altitude. The aircraft rader wont pick up the helicopter because of the huge amount of radar distortion on the low altitudes.

                Thank you...

Lol... Fair enough... but you're basing that on two presumptions:

                  (i) Hollywood films are factually and technically accurate, and
(ii) The lock-on tone Maverick had was indeed from a passive system rather than anything else (such as radar from the enemy radar)

And before you say anything, yes, you can tell when a radar is "searching" and when it is tracking and locked - the frequency changes...

Just like those Israeli tanks in Gaza have 'muslim stone sensors'.
