It's definitely nice that the purple heart registers only once....I havent got one in quite awhile, but when I was starting I had a pretty rough time.

Aye, but it'll only register the once in your stats.

Yes, but you can still get more. It will only show it as having it once.

All medals can be gained multiple times, with double the requirements, 750 hours and you can go for the Good Conduct medal for the third time.
