Re: Flying... I just dont get it.

Contrary to some posts, flying slower (not all the time, but in some A2A combat) does something to the missile tracking. I occationally run into pilots that fly at about 75-80% throttle and manage to avoid missile locks with simple rolls. Don't know why, so I end up gunning them down. To get out of single bomb mode, fill up, drop 1 and reload. When you do your next drop all bombs will be released (not the AF planes).

Yes, you're right. I'm full of sh!t. But yeah I'm pretty damn good. So why is it that I cant stay alive for longer than 30 seconds in a jet or attack chopper? I spent hours practicing on private local servers, tweeked my joy stick endlessly to get just the right sensitivity, practiced all manner of aerial manuvers and can do barrel rolls and loop the loops in choppers. I can stop on a dime and hover perfectly to line up that TV shot...

Oh hell, you get the idea. So why is it that I shoot the crap out of anything that flies with AA, .50 cal, APCs, whatever I can get. But rarely do I get to bring one down.

But for some strange reason, I get into a chopper or a plane and can get off the ground and fly one quick lap around the map, maybe even get some bombs dropped or some rockets fired and then BOOM. dead.

I have tried every common sense tactic in the book, avoid flags with AA emplacements or where AA vehicles spawn, I dont just waste flares the second somebody locks onto me. I jink, I juke, I jive. I hide behind buildings and mountains. I fly back for repairs whenever possible. I keep a close eye on my map. I communicate with copilots. So WTF am I doing wrong?

Dont even get me started on dogfighting. I have heard that certain jets have better turining capabilities than others. So why do I always seem to be in the one that turns like a morbidly obese beached whale?

And bombing? I'm clueless. Everyone else seems like they can casually ricochet the bombs off the enemy flag pole like its nothing. Me? I fly over an enemy flag where I know enemies are bound to be and end up feeling lucky that I didn't TK any of my buddies.

Does anybody else feel like this?
its fun!!! thats why we do it!!!! + i get like 90 points a round in jet!! its skill with a joystick!

Ny best advice is to read the advice that these guys try to seriously post...it's the basics....and after that it's spending a helluva lot of time executing what you learn....I've got over 800 hours in the jets alone and still make a lot of mistakes, but I don't play on a lot of servers that allow non-cap raping....that makes you have to learn how to actually bomb real targets and dogfight the hell out of the other aircraft.....in time, you learn what each aircraft can and can't do and how to best utilize the one's your team has....

Like I said, the guys in this post have already mentioned most of the basics....after that is just repetition and practice.

the only way u can get better i think is by finding out wat works best in public servers, like when i take off i climbb to 400 feet or so,gives me a little breathing rooom so i can pounce on that unsusecting jet.

After a ton of hours playing..
Ive found I can do everything but effectively use anything pertainign to the attack heli..from gunning to flying.
            I suck a$$.
For some reason I just cant do it..I hit stuff, miss open shots.
I just saty away from it..which sucks because a attack heli can dominate a map as opposed to any other vehicle.

Because whilst you've been practicing on the ground learning new weapons map layouts etc. They have been in their Jets/Choppers etc. practicing learning bombing runs, Aircraft tactics and evasive maneuvers.

Or at least that’s what I imagine, unfortunately, its very hard borderline impossible to be very good in Jets/Helos and Infantry. I'd said its possible to be good in both, I'd like to say I'm a good Helo Pilot and Infantry and decent in a jet.

learning jets and helis a year after release puts you at a severe disadvantage.

This really hurst me to say, but saltburn is right.

I've looged 100+ hours aviator and heli time now and have become a pretty decent pilot. I had the same frustration as you at first because my first few hundred bf2 hours were spent on the ground. The air game after all is a whole different side of BF2 than the ground.

Like everything in life, it just takes time and practice.

                      so true...
after all the nerfing of the choppers; ie removing 8 hydras, decreasing the choppers armor, and increasing the aa's ability to hit them, it definitely makes it tougher on today's beginnners.

I myself have given up flying unless there is nobody trying to fly. Too many smacktards. The way I started and some or many others was with BF1942 and then I got BF:V and flew and now that I have and have had BF2 for a while I fly. When I was flying in 1942 I sucked, then got better.

But, now flares don't work and the J-10 has too much power over all other jets I haven't flew a jet in a while.

but it's so rewarding to take down the j10, which happens to me far more than getting taken down by it. of course, that could be entirely up to chance, the server i am in, and how good the pilots on the other team are. when someone steals the j10 on Wake Air Show i feel it is my civic duty to shoot them down.
