    PhysX in battlefield

Well this post is a bit of WISH full thinking that Dice might actually consider using the Ageia PhysX hardware in the new battlefield 2024.

It would be nice if they added it into the current engine ready for a future patch but im sure thats not goin gto happen

I purchased the card on release last week and man its a nice maths co-proccessor.

Think about what could be done in battlefield with it...as long as you have good video cards ( I have 2 x1900's so im ok ) then think about things like firing the tank at a building wall and you see bits flying off it everywhere.
Or shooting at a fence and it shatters properly.

The possibilities are endless :) Cant wait to see this hardware in action in new games :)

    lol @ 2024

But I have read reviews and the PhysX is supposed to be terrible.

Ageia PhysX at the moment is not all its made out to be,
just stick with your normal set up for the time being

ok ok I should re-read before submitting

        2124

I have tried the PhysX card with a couple of demos and Ghost recon and to be honest I think its nice. It does free up the CPU as its meant to so basically I cannot see how it can be bad :)

its bad because it costs £200 for a few more boxes flying around, and puts more stress on your video card and generaly gives you less fps then you would have without it.

It's in its starting process, they make some mistakes im sure updates will be made for it or new PhysX cards will come out that are much better.

You can't go by first week reviews. You might be too young to remember, but it took a while for 3D cards to prove their worth. Developers are still figuring out what they can do, and want to do with it. There are over a 100 games underway by 60 developers, and it takes years for the really big budget games to come out. Even now we have games that don't full implement all that DirectX 9 can do. The reports of a loss of FPS is misleading. It depends on the developer's work, drivers, and the PhysX middleware. It's very early yet for anyone to be passing judgement.

The PPU will absolutely revolutionize PC gaming. And once we get to DirectX 10 cards, where they either are or aren't compliant and there aren't different code paths in games for different vendors, then we'll see the dawn of a new era. If may take a year or more for developers to learn how to make use of this new power though.

Think about some quick obvious things a PPU will allow:
1 - Arti will make big craters in the ground instead of just scorch marks and momentary dust. On Karkand you can bomb the river crossing so it becomes impassible except to APC's. But then your team can't cross easily either so have to think strategically.
2 - Two engi's in tanks are killing your team. Can't kill them, then shoot the crane and let it crash down on the tanks instead.
3 - Can't get those snipers on the roof? Just knock down the whole bloody building.
4 - All doors and walls are destructible so if you're backed into a corner, just blast through and exit the building or climb to any roof or floor.
5 - Crash your APC into building columns to knock the whole building down, blocking an entire road or two until the round ends.
6 - Blow out window glass and players nearby take damage from the glass shards.
7 - Spec Ops blows up a dam causing a small flood downstream, or it washes away a key bridge.
8 - Gernade blows a wheel off a Jeep but unfortuneately the wheel rolls down the road and kills your squad leader.
9 - AT guy runs out of ammo and pushes a boulder down to cause a rock slide destroying that tank.
10 - Annoyed by that sniper on the watertower? Tank blows a hole in it, washing enemies away. Sniper respawns and climbs into the new dark hole for safer shooting.

Now think about the other games you play where anything goes physics can really give you freedom to solve problems, and create new problems for your teammates if you didn't think about consequences before hand. I promise you all, it will be a whole new gaming world 2 years from now! Don't judge it now from a couple snippets of game demo.

Yes, I'm excited about what the future holds for physics in gaming and the fact that PPU cards already exists is a good sign of things to come.

But when 3D accelerators were first introduced, there were early adopters and they enjoyed their hardware...albeit not mature, but still provided enjoyment. I'd rather wait for a mature produce.

I WILL be purchasing a PPU card (or a mobo with PPU once they become integrated) sometime down the road. Remember when game boxes used to say '3D Accelerator Required'? (e.g. EverQuest).

                  Re: PhysX in battlefield

It is very early days and it will take a long time for it to take off and people to push it to its limits and what it can do.

Back in the days of the Amega is a good indication of why I like the idea of this card.

Back in the 80's when I started writting games for the Amega the co-processor on that helped no end. It did allow things to be done that could not be done without it. Simple screen affects and extra abilities with scrolling. Some of these techniques took us years to develop but once we had discovered what can be done it became second nature for games to use these techniques.

The overhead with displays when displaying extra objects is obvious and thats why you have to weigh up what hardware you have and what can be done. As I mentioned I am running with 2 x1900's so I have plenty of processing power there which means adding extra objects will not slow my system down.
In fact my system is held back by my cpu which means the Physx card for me will benifit my system...less work for cpu more work for gpu and my gpu's are sitting pretty much idle at moment :)

The whole future of gaming is going to benifit no end with ppu's and it all adds to better visual's and HOPEFULLY better game play :)

Well im just downloading the Cellfactor demo and after seeing the movie for it I think im going to be having fun when I get home from office tonight :)

Yeah, 2142 is the name of the game. 2042 is the expected release date of the first bug-free patch. Get it staight.

i played the cellfactor demo without a ppu and only a small amount of lagg when i first joined the game, that game is amazing. dont get me wrong, the games with support for these ppu's look amazing but i wont be getting one anytime soon, even if i did have the money. i dont think there would be any point in adding support for physx cards into bf2 now but i would love to see the next battlefield game to.

Yeah seeing it in 2124 ( correct this time would be cool. SciFiMan hit the nail on the head with some dewscriptions. The extra eliment of game play that can come into play.

There is a demo which comes with the BFG card. You sit in a hanger with a mounter gun and have to shoot planes flying in. At one point I was shooting this crane and it swang around and took out one of the planes that started to fly through.

When you actually do that it opens your eyes and you realise what extra playability can be added to a game that has not been there before.

Like Scifi stated...a sniper on the roof which you cannot shoot..get the tank to blow half the side of the building lol and watch him fall to his death :) it opens doors...roll on the next couple of years and advancement in the hardware...O and maybe Dice employing a better development team

I dont think I will spend 300 bucks for yet another 7000rpm squeeker in my box anytime soon. The only thing a PPU *could* do for you is pretty up the gameplay unrelated graphics in a multiplayer game. Everything else is calculated by the server anyways. So if you realy want to enchance BF2x, hook the server up to a decent PPU. Maybe that will allow more clients on a server or at least more solid physics.

does this mean when i drive my tank at full speed into the stupid sign in the street on karkand it will finally break and not stop the tank dead in its tracks?

jk that is soo dumb....a sign on a metal post stopping a tank....strong sign me thinks
