You can either a- build your own PC by getting parts from Pricewatch.com or Newegg.com or you can b- by a custom made machine from places like Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Cyberpower PC, or Monarch Computers.

I recently bought the Dell XPS M140 laptop. It sucked. Underpowered, yet overpriced. I returned it within a week and bought an AMD Xplorer model from Cyberpower PC for less money, yet the machine turned out by be much faster and customizeable than Dell's.

For $1400, I got:
15" Widescreen WXGA monitor (the shiney kind, not the anti-glare kind)
AMD Turion processor at about 2.8 GHz
1GB Corsair RAM
80GB HDD
Built-in WiFi, IR, Bluetooth, and IEEE 1394
Dual-layer DVD/RW+ drive

This thing is powerful enough to render a 20-piece SolidWorks assembly in about 5 seconds.

The fastest Turions come is 2.4Ghz. The fastest available in the model of Notebook you got is 2.2Ghz. I believe you are confused.

It would appear you are right. However Alienware still maintaines its own support and marketing. They are an entirely different subisdary of Dell. The merger allowed Alienware access to Dell's supply chain and allowed AMD access to Dell. I just learned of this when you mentioned it and found this: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1941376,00.asp.

Either way, Alienware systems r still top notch. I hate Dell and in NO way was I recomending them. Just offering a system in the lower price range. I personally build all my systems (other than laptops). However as stated he cannot build his own.

Rgr,Dell did assimulate Alienware.The truth is,unless you can custom order,or build it yourself,your going to end up with a bunch of bloatware/hardware your never going to use on a gaming machine.

Alienware is a bigger company then Dell. Dell wishes they were Alienware.

Alienware may bank rupt you, but they got the best pc's hands down. Their tech support owns, and the amount of neat programs they add on those pc's are insane. A friend of mine has an alienware and it runs 20c idle and 25c load. I believe hes got an Athlon 64 FX60. Hes never been happier with such a great machine. The tech support as I said is golden. If something goes wrong, they will replace the part that fails. If that ever happens...

For gaming your modern AMD Athlon 64 3700 will out perform anything Intel has out. Right now rather Intel fans admit or not, AMD is shining.

Im glad your frind likes his Alineware. Heres my experience with their tech support:

Tech Support is mediocre. Heres why i say this. My laptop shut down one night and never turned back on. It took me 2 weeks to get Alienware to issue an RMA number. Turns out the mobo was faulty and they new ahead of time that they had a bad batch of mobo's.

Now i play BF2 on my laptop, but the specs are pretty nice. It handles it well but will shut down at random because the system over heats. lol. Not good. But it works. For gaming id stick to their desktops even though their laptops can handle it.

I would go with the smaller custom companies like ibuypower etc. Alienware is too overpriced for my tastes, Im willing to bet those smaller companies can get the job done just as well.

As of right now, AMD has a faster processor. However, within the next few years I'm betting that will change. Intel will come out with a faster processor, then a few years down the road AMD will have it. It goes back and forth. But as far as processing per cycle, AMD is better hands down.
You want and AMD processor if you're going to use it for gaming.

Dell is actually very close to pricing compared to building your own, and so is ibuypower.com or whatever it is. If you can't build your own those are just as good.

Not per my checks. I priced out a comparable XPS system to the one I built myself and I saved over $1000. Building your own PC is easy and what you end up with is so much better. Got most of my parts from either zipzoomfly.com or newegg.com - either of these two consistently had the best prices over other internet PC component suppliers.

I am an AMD fan. My machine sports an Opteron 170. I have to warn you though, BF2 was not coded for dual core boxes. There is a flaw with the game that will make it crash/disconnect randomly because it the second proc. So, everytime you start BF, you will need to disable the second proc (CPU1) in taskmanager to get stable play. If you need, I can find some threads about this. It was a problem I had and some friends too.
