EAX is f*ed up in many places anyways ... I climb up a oil drill tower and suddenly everything sounds like Im sitting on top of a BH inside a tight metal cabin.

I use a TB 5.1 headset and if I turn my view, I can hear things better from the side. The fog disappears too.

Got this too, started hearing this today (first time I had played since sunday), heard every single arty-launch as commander no matter where I was on the map. Also heard all kinds of explosions while beeing commander, I had to check the USMC-uncap base like every minute to see if it actually was something in the area.

First time I've seen this bug.

I'm using onboard sound of an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard.

I think it does, my roommate with an Audigy 1 can't hear the artillery being fired. But my Audigy 2 is able to hear it from across the map. My squad has come to depend on me since most of them are using older soundcards and don't update their drivers very often. When I yell "incoming" everyone scrambles.

I have no EAX in BF2 and I can still hear it. That's the way it's always been.

I use to be able to hear the incoming artilery (a series of whistling shells noises for a few second before it actually hit), but with my X-Fi card I don't hear it anymore, although I have my sound set on High instead of medium or low when it was using my motherboards onboard sound. I'll have to experiment with software rendering and low setting like Drevor says to see if I can get the sound back.

I have an Audigy 1, and could hear it all the time up until I installed new SB drivers last week. Now, I've lost all those sounds ;( Really sucks.

And the audio is now very directional. If I'm flying, and am using the outside F10 (?) view, and turn to the left, I only hear the roar from the jet engine from the right channel, without any blending of the audio at all. It's almost like it's now 100% stereo separation. If I "look" towards a helo that is 50 feet from me, I can hear it just fine. If I look 30' to the left or right, it's totally gone audibly.

I can't hear footsteps of people around me any more. I can't hear tanks coming. It's totally killed the game for me now.

Personally I doubt it is a bug - you should be able to hear incoming arty from miles away irl
I take it and use it to my advantage - I'd hate to see it go

That's an easy fix, roll back to the previous drivers.

Yeah seems to me its kind of off and on type of thing here. I never had this feature for the first few months of owng BF2, then came a new patch re-installed, then in single player i could hear all the soldiers talking close to me, with out radios. Usually i just heard radio chatter, then i started hearing thier actual voices, artillery sounded amazing, as most of vehicle sounds changed as well. My online account wasnt like this though, it was still same old same old. Then after i did nothing, logged in online one day, and the UBER sound had somehow managed to find its way into my online play as well.

I have no answer why it does this, just another account that it does happen.
